More from Dr. Naylor

Small cuts, scrapes and ringworm spots don't stay small when they're ignored. Blu-Kote is a fast-drying antiseptic wound dressing made for surface wounds, abrasions and ringworm. It is effective against pus-producing bacteria and common fungus infections, and it penetrates to reduce pus formation and dried secretions from pox-like lesions.

Keep it where you can grab it when the animal is already caught. It is made for the everyday nicks and rubs on the animals you keep, which is exactly where a quick antiseptic earns its place.

Why keep it in the barn kit

Most barn injuries are small, dirty and easy to miss until they swell. A quick antiseptic on the spot helps you stay ahead of an everyday nick, and a fast-drying dressing means less mess on the animal.

Ringworm is another common job. It spreads from animal to animal and shows up as round, scaly patches that need regular attention. This suits the backyard flock and goat keeper, the horse owner who wants a kit that works, and the rancher who checks the herd every day.

How to use it

Treat the spot as soon as you find it:

  1. Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly. On ringworm, scrub and remove the scale and scab before the first application.
  2. Apply a light coat to the surface wound, abrasion or ringworm spot. With the aerosol, shake well, hold the can upright and spray from 4 to 8 inches.
  3. Treat once or twice a day, or as indicated, until healing occurs.
  4. For deep, dirty or puncture wounds, call your veterinarian rather than treating it at home.

Good to know

  • Keep a can in the barn or tack room so a minor cut gets covered while the animal is already caught.
  • Have a vet look at deep, dirty or slow-healing wounds before you rely on a topical.
  • Keep the wound clean and dry while it's healing, and keep flies off it, since flies find open spots fast.
  • Keep a clean towel, a bucket of clean water and your wound supplies together so the job takes minutes.
  • Wear gloves when you apply it. Blu-Kote stains hands, clothes and anything it touches, wet or dry.
