Long pods without the sting

Clemson Spineless #80 produces straight, grooved green pods without the sharp spines that make picking some okra uncomfortable. Pods can reach 7 to 9 inches, but the best eating comes from picking them young, while they are still tender. The plants grow about 4 feet tall and mature in roughly 56 days. That makes this a useful warm-weather row for gumbo, stews, relishes, or a quick skillet side. If you already grow okra, the spineless pods are the difference you notice at harvest.

Give okra the hot end of the garden

Okra likes warm soil and full sun. Plant after frost danger has passed in a well-drained bed. In North Florida, keep it in the late spring and summer garden rather than rushing seed into cool ground. Space plants so air can move through the foliage and leave a path for picking. Water young plants while they establish, then keep the root zone evenly moist during flowering and pod growth. A mulch layer helps suppress weeds and holds moisture through hot spells. Avoid a low spot where water stands after rain.

Pick before pods turn tough

Once flowers begin setting fruit, check the row every couple of days. Cut pods while they are small and flexible; long pods left too long can turn fibrous. Use a knife or garden snips and avoid twisting the plant. Regular picking keeps tender okra coming through the warm season. Bring the harvest indoors promptly and refrigerate what you will cook soon. Slice small pods into gumbo or stew, roast them whole, or add them to a skillet with tomatoes and onion. When the row produces more than dinner needs, freeze cleaned pieces for another meal.

Plan for a tall summer row

A mature Clemson Spineless plant reaches about 4 feet, so set the row where it will not shade shorter vegetables. Leave enough access to reach both sides without stepping into the bed. Keep a close eye on the plants as you harvest: tender pods are easy to miss under broad leaves. Okra fits the part of the garden that stays hot after spring greens fade. One short row can supply repeated picking without taking over the whole plot.
