Lice and flies don't take a day off on a working herd, and a pour-on is one of the simplest ways to treat a lot of cattle without setting up a sprayer for each one. Cattlemen's Choice Pour-On puts permethrin and piperonyl butoxide to work on lice and flies on beef cattle, on lactating and non-lactating dairy cattle, and on calves.

The pour-on form goes on the animal, so there is no tank to pump and no spraying in a crowd. The same product can also be applied as a mist spray or a back rubber, so you can match the method to the herd and the setup you have.

For sheep and lambs, it controls keds when applied as a pour-on.

Highlights

  • Pour-on for beef and dairy cattle and calves
  • Controls lice and flies on cattle
  • Applied as a pour-on, mist spray or back rubber
  • Controls keds on sheep and lambs
  • Permethrin 1.0% with piperonyl butoxide 1.0%

Why choose a pour-on insecticide

A pour-on works along the back, so you can treat a group in the chute or the pen without mixing a tank or chasing the herd through a spray. On a working herd, that is time saved on every treatment day.

Fly season is when most cattle owners reach for it. Flies crowd the herd and make cattle restless, and a treatment during that season is a routine job that a jug on the shelf makes easy to start.

It suits cow-calf herds, dairy operations with calves, and small farms with a few head that want a simple routine.

How to use it

Work the treatment into the routine the herd already follows, and match the method to the job.

  • Use it on cattle and calves for lice and flies, and on sheep and lambs for keds.
  • Pick the method that fits your setup: pour-on, mist spray or back rubber.
  • Store the jug in a cool, dry area away from children, animals and feed.
  • Keep children away from the product at all times.

Cattle and calves: apply 1/2 fl. oz. per 100 pounds of body weight, up to 5 fl. oz. for any one animal. Pour along the back and down the face, or mist it on the neck, face, back, legs and ears.

Sheep: pour 1/4 fl. oz. per 50 pounds of body weight along the back, up to 3 fl. oz. for any one animal. Treat the whole flock after shearing.

Back rubbers: mix one pint per gallon of #2 diesel or mineral oil. Repeat as needed, but do not exceed 5 fl. oz. per animal in any 14-day interval. For lice, two treatments 14 days apart work best.

Good to know

  • Fly control works best as a routine, so pair treatments with regular manure removal, which cuts the places flies breed.
  • Keep a simple treatment log with the date, the animals treated and the method used.
  • Rotate products only on your vet's advice, and keep records of what you use and when.
  • Keep a clean chute and a few spare supplies on hand, so treatment day runs smoothly.

Keep a jug on hand so treatment day doesn't start with a trip to town.
