Compact vines, sweet peas

Little Marvel is a compact garden pea with vines about 18 inches long. They carry many pods around 3 inches long, filled with medium-small, wrinkled tender, sweet peas. The 65-day maturity gives a useful target for planning. This variety suits a small bed or a narrow row where a tall trellis would be unnecessary. Its short vines still need room for air and light, so keep foliage from being pressed against nearby plants.

Sow while the weather is cool

Peas tolerate some frost but struggle when heat arrives. Plant early in a sunny, well-drained bed, or use a late-season sowing where local weather allows the vines to mature before hot conditions return. Sow seed 1 to 1½ inches deep, placing one seed every 2 inches. Space rows 24 inches apart. Do not thin seedlings; their close spacing is part of the planting direction. Keep the soil moist during germination.

Pick clusters as pods fill

Watch the vines once blossoms fade. Pick pods when they are plump and peas have filled, before pods become tough. The plants produce clusters, so use scissors or pruners to snip stems rather than tugging vines. Check the row every day or two during main harvest. Picked pods hold quality best when cooled promptly. Shell peas for a side dish while they are still tender and sweet. If the pods are not yet full, leave them on the vine and return at the next check.

Save a small harvest for later

Fresh peas have their best texture soon after picking. Shell only what you plan to cook, then refrigerate the rest in a breathable container and use promptly. A larger flush can be blanched and frozen or pressure canned using a tested vegetable process. Because Little Marvel dislikes heat, a spring crop may slow as summer temperatures rise; succession sowing can spread the harvest where the season allows. Short vines make harvest accessible without a climbing canopy. A handful can be eaten fresh, while the larger flush can be frozen for later meals. Shell the peas, blanch them briefly, cool promptly in ice water, and drain before packing. Freeze them in meal-sized portions so they thaw quickly. Pick pods before they become tough; mature peas left too long can lose the soft texture that makes this compact variety pleasant to eat.
