A traditional white dent corn

Truckers Favorite White is a white corn variety for gardeners and farm plots. The exact cultivar name matters when choosing a seed lot; Its white kernels can be harvested fresh or allowed to dry, depending on the intended use and harvest stage. Plan for a warm-season planting in a sunny area with room for several rows. Corn depends on wind to move pollen from tassels to silks, so a compact block is a better layout than a single long row.

Plant in blocks

Corn relies on wind to move pollen from tassels to silks. Plant several short rows together instead of one long, narrow row so pollen reaches more ears. Sow after the soil has warmed and cold nights have passed. Place kernels about an inch deep in prepared soil, then keep the bed evenly moist during emergence. Thin or space plants so each has room for roots and leaves. The exact planting density should suit the growing conditions and how much irrigation you can provide.

Keep water steady through tasseling

Corn needs reliable moisture as it grows, with particular attention from tasseling through ear fill. A dry spell at that point can reduce pollination and leave ears poorly filled. Water deeply when rainfall is short, and control weeds before they compete with young plants. Side-dress nitrogen only when the soil and crop need it; excess fertilizer can push leafy growth without solving drought or poor pollination.

Choose the harvest you want

Decide how you plan to use the ears before planting. Corn may be picked at a tender stage or left to mature, but harvest timing depends on the corn type and the intended use. Keep notes on the planting date and how the crop performs in your soil. If you grow another corn type nearby and want to preserve seed characteristics, prevent overlapping pollen shed by separating plantings in space or time. Those steps matter most when saving seed for another season; for a one-time garden planting, focus on a healthy stand and timely harvest.
