One string, assorted color

One Lyles Boy’s Goat String arrives in an assorted color; the orange, green and blue photograph illustrates options, not a three-piece package. It is a 1/4-inch pigging-style string for goat tying, not a general-purpose lead. Color is not selectable, so choose this item when the tying string matters more than receiving a particular shade.

Built-in wrapped eyes

The wrapped eyes are formed at the ends of the string. The Hondo wording refers to that built-in construction, not a separate hondo packed with it. A goat-tying string is also different from the tether rope that holds a goat at its stake. Rules for the event describe the contestant using a pigging string or other permitted tie material after reaching the goat. Keep the two jobs separate when checking your gear: the tether remains attached to the stake, while the pigging string is carried for the tie.

A practical fit check

The 1/4-inch size gives you a concrete comparison point when replacing a string already used in practice. Check how the wrapped eyes sit in your hand and whether the loop arrangement suits the way you prepare the tie. Compare the working string with your event setup rather than choosing by diameter alone; two strings of equal thickness can handle differently if their length or construction differs. That check is especially useful when changing brands or replacing a well-worn item.

Good to know

Goat-tying rules are set by the organization and division running the event, so check the current rulebook for permitted tie material before competition. The event involves reaching the goat, dismounting and tying three legs; rules then require the contestant to step away while a judge checks the completed tie. Some rules specify wraps followed by a half hitch, hooey or knot, then a six-second hold. The exact sequence and timing vary. This string’s pigging-style form is useful when assembling event gear, but the local rulebook determines whether it is allowed for a particular class.
