More from Red Lake Earth

Red Lake Earth keeps a ration moving. This natural blend of diatomaceous earth and calcium bentonite goes into animal feed at no more than 2%, where it prevents caking and improves flow. That is the difference between a feeder that runs clean and a bin that bridges on a damp morning.

Both minerals come from a single deposit in British Columbia, Canada, where they occur together in their natural state. That combination is rare, with only one other known deposit in the world that contains both. The product carries an OMRI certificate, the organic input review many organic growers check before they buy.

Highlights

  • Keeps feed from caking in the bin
  • Helps ration flow through feeders and augers
  • Natural diatomaceous earth and calcium bentonite blend
  • Use at no more than 2% of feed
  • Fits poultry, beef, dairy and pig rations
  • Carries an OMRI certificate

What it's for

Feed picks up moisture and packs together, especially in a humid Panhandle summer or a damp barn in January. Anti-caking minerals keep the particles separate and absorb some of that moisture, so the ration pours out of the bin instead of sticking in a solid cake. Whether you are filling a gravity feeder, running an auger or mixing a batch in a bucket, a loose ration is the one that gets eaten.

Red Lake Earth suits poultry flock keepers who mix their own rations, cattle and dairy operators feeding from bins, pig producers and anyone who has fought a bridged bin. The use rate is small, so the jobs are everyday ones: filling feeders, mixing batches and keeping the feed room ready for the next mix.

How to feed it

  1. Weigh the feed batch first. The limit is 2% of the total diet, which is no more than 2 pounds of Red Lake Earth for every 100 pounds of feed.
  2. Mix it through the whole batch, not on top, so every bite gets the same treatment.
  3. Mix only the feed you will use soon, and keep the mixed batch dry until it is fed.
  4. Close the container and store it dry between batches so the powder stays easy to measure.

Good to know

  • Keep it sealed. Moisture is what starts caking, so an open container is an invitation to clumps. Reseal after every batch.
  • Wear a dust mask when you pour. Fine mineral dust can irritate your lungs and eyes, so wash your hands after handling.
  • Use a scale. A kitchen or feed scale keeps you under the 2% limit every time.
  • Check the bin. If a ration still bridges after mixing, look at the bin, the moisture and the storage spot before you add more.
  • Mixing it into a medicated feed? Check the Compendium of Medicating Ingredient Brochures for acceptable drug compatibilities first.

Store the container off the floor in a dry spot, and keep a clean scoop and a sealed bin nearby so mixing takes minutes.
