Two measurements, two jobs

This Weaver Tom Thumb has a 4.5-inch mouthpiece and 6-inch cheeks. Mouth width measures across the part that rests in the horse’s mouth; cheek length describes the side pieces. Compare the mouth measurement with the horse, then consider the cheek shape and length separately. A match on one measurement does not settle whether the whole design suits the horse and rider.

Read the cheek design

The side pieces extend above and below the mouthpiece. The bridle attaches at the upper rings, while the rein rings sit lower on the cheeks, making this a shanked arrangement. That differs from a direct-pull snaffle, where the reins attach directly to the mouthpiece. A center joint does not determine how the bit acts; the rein attachment does.

The mouthpiece is jointed

The mouthpiece joins at the center. A jointed mouthpiece can conform around the tongue more than a solid bar, while a single center joint changes where pressure is felt when the reins are engaged. Horses differ in mouth shape and response, so the joint alone cannot tell you whether this bit is the right choice. Compare the fit and design with the horse’s needs.

Choose the full setup

A shanked bit is selected as part of a complete bridle setup. Cheek length and shape influence leverage; mouthpiece width does not tell you how the shanks will act. Match the cheek design to the horse’s training and the rider’s experience. When changing from a direct-pull bit, get help from a qualified trainer or bit fitter to assess the whole setup.

Check fit before use

Before riding, check that the mouthpiece sits centered without pinching at the lips and that the cheek pieces clear the face. Inspect the center joint and rings for damage or buildup. Clean the metal after use and dry it before storage. If the horse shows discomfort or changes its response, stop and review fit, teeth and training with a knowledgeable professional instead of tightening the bridle to mask the problem.

Bit dimensions and construction

Directions for use

Check mouthpiece width and cheek design separately. Confirm fit and use with a qualified equine professional when changing bit type or if the horse shows discomfort. Inspect the mouthpiece joint and cheek rings before use.

Cautions

A shanked bit uses leverage when the reins attach to the cheek shanks. A center joint does not make a bit a direct-pull snaffle. Select and use the bit with appropriate training and fit.
