A shanked bit with a copper-plated mouth

This Weaver Equine Tom Thumb bit pairs a 5-inch copper-plated mouth with 6-1/2-inch chrome-plated cheeks. The long shanks distinguish its action from a direct-pull snaffle: rein pressure rotates the shanks and can create leverage at the horse’s mouth and poll. It belongs with a rider who understands curb-bit use and has a horse trained to respond to that kind of cue.

Fit starts with the horse’s mouth

Measure the horse before choosing a mouthpiece. A bit that is too narrow can pinch the lips, while excess width can let the mouthpiece shift from side to side. The 5-inch measurement is the mouth width, not the cheek length. A comfortable fit depends on the horse’s mouth and bridle adjustment, so check both rather than relying on a familiar size from another horse.

Understand the curb action

The reins attach to the lower part of a shank, while the bridle cheek pieces attach above the mouthpiece. As the shank turns, pressure can reach the mouth and poll. A curb strap affects how far the shank rotates. Curb leverage changes with shank length and the proportion above and below the mouthpiece. A horse should already understand rein pressure before working in a curb bit. The Tom Thumb name does not make this a direct-action snaffle.

Choose material with the whole mouthpiece in mind

The mouth is copper plated, not solid copper, and the cheeks are chrome plated. Copper is used in some mouthpieces because it can encourage saliva, while metal choice alone does not determine how a bit feels in use. Mouthpiece shape, width, shank geometry and rein handling all matter. A horse that resists, mouths the bit or tosses its head may be reacting to fit, dental discomfort or pressure. Those signs call for a careful tack and dental check, not simply a stronger bit.

Good to know

This design is a specific option for riders who are already using a shanked curb bit and need a five-inch mouthpiece. It is not a general-purpose first bit for an untrained horse. Have a knowledgeable trainer or equine professional assess fit and use, especially when changing from a direct-pull bit. Inspect the mouthpiece and cheek connections before riding, and stop using any tack with a damaged or rough surface that could contact the horse’s mouth.

Product details

Weaver Equine Tom Thumb bit. Maker SKU 25-3130. 5 in copper-plated mouth; 6-1/2 in chrome-plated cheeks. Exact retail UPC: 000399305267.

Directions for use

Measure the horse's mouth before selecting a width. The 5 in measurement is the mouthpiece width; the cheeks measure 6-1/2 in. This is a shanked curb-style bit: reins attach below the mouthpiece and the bridle cheek pieces above it. Adjust and use with suitable curb equipment and training.

Cautions

A shanked curb bit applies leverage, including pressure at the poll. It is not a direct-pull snaffle. A horse should already understand and respond willingly to bit pressure before being ridden in a curb bit. Have fit and use assessed by an experienced equine professional.
