Riders running barrels or chasing speed down the straightaway get more control at a higher rate of speed, with the flex it takes to bring a horse around a turn. The cheeks run 7-1/2 inches, and the dogbone mouthpiece is designed to lie flat on the tongue for comfort.

The mouthpiece is sweet iron, and it's meant to rust. That rust brings out a sweet taste that helps promote salivation. Everything else is stainless steel, so it stands up to sweat, rain and daily riding without rusting on you. If you're not sure this is the right mouth for your horse, a trusted trainer is worth the phone call before you spend the money.

Good to know

  • Rust on a sweet iron mouth is the point, not a defect. Wipe off grit and sweat after a ride, but don't scrub it back to bare metal or you lose the sweet taste that helps promote salivation.
  • Give your horse a few rides to settle into a new mouthpiece before you point him at a barrel.
  • Set it in a headstall with quick-change bit ends and you can swap mouthpieces at the trailer instead of unlacing leather.

Get it on the bridle and give your horse a few rides in it before your next run.
