Keep your flock's water going with a base that turns a 1-gallon jar into a gravity-feed waterer. The base screws onto the matching Little Giant jar, sold separately, and the water flows down into the base as the birds drink. Fill the jar, set the waterer on the ground, and you have a steady supply without hauling a bucket every morning.

The base is made of heavy-duty polystyrene and measures 9 inches across and 1.5 inches high. That wide, low shape keeps it steady on the ground and gives birds an easy place to drink. It is made in the USA, and it is the base to keep on hand when one needs replacing.

Highlights

Why a gravity waterer for the poultry yard

An open bowl in the yard fills with dirt, leaves and droppings within a day, and birds knock it over. A gravity waterer keeps the supply in the jar and off the ground, and the base holds the water at a level birds can drink from. That is why many flock keepers use one in the coop or the run.

A 1-gallon size suits a small flock in a run or coop. You fill the jar once and check the level as you go about your chores, instead of walking a bucket out every morning. In hot weather, a gravity waterer is easier to keep up with than a tub that needs constant refilling.

It suits a backyard flock keeper, a 4-H family or a farm that runs several pens. Keep a spare base on hand so you can swap out a dirty one while it soaks, and the flock stays watered through cleaning day.

How to use it

Set it up once on level ground, and the jar does the rest.

  1. Fill the matching 1-gallon jar, sold separately, with fresh water.
  2. Screw the base onto the jar until it sits snug.
  3. Turn the assembly over and set it on level ground in the coop or run, where the birds reach the base easily.
  4. Check the water level each day, and refill the jar as needed.

Good to know

  • Keep the waterer out of direct sun to slow algae growth in the base.
  • Set the waterer apart from the feeder so bedding and feed do not get kicked into the water.
  • In freezing weather, empty the base and jar so ice does not crack them.

Clean the base with warm soapy water every week or two, rinse well and let it dry before refilling. A quick scrub keeps the waterer ready for the next round of chores.
