The jar is molded from transparent polyethylene, so the water level shows through the side at a glance. You can see when it's low without unscrewing anything, and you can see when it's cloudy and due for a wash. It measures 7 inches across and 9.25 inches high.

A gallon is a practical amount for a small flock in mild weather, and the jar is easy to lift, fill and carry to the sink for a scrub.

Why a clear jar makes the difference

How to use it

• In cold weather, water freezes in the jar and can crack the plastic. Bring the jar in overnight or use a heated base.
