Baby chicks need water they can reach without climbing into it. This galvanized base turns a 1-quart jar into a gravity-feed waterer, so the water flows down into the base as the chicks drink. Use a Little Giant screw-on jar or a standard Mason jar, whichever is already on your shelf.
The steel is heavy-gauge and galvanized for the long haul, and the rounded, embossed edges are there for the chicks. A chick's neck and head are small and tender, and smooth edges help keep them from scraping on the rim as they drink. It's a simple, durable choice for the brooder.
Highlights
- Turns a 1-quart jar into a gravity-feed waterer
- Fits a Little Giant screw-on jar or a standard Mason jar
- Heavy-gauge galvanized steel for years of use
- Rounded, embossed edges help reduce chafing
- Small footprint for a crowded brooder
Why a gravity waterer beats a dish for chicks
Chicks can drown in deep water, so the usual brooder setup is a shallow base they can drink from without wading in. A gravity waterer does that. The water sits in the jar and feeds into the base as it's used, so you aren't refilling a shallow dish every few hours.
Keep the waterer off the bedding. Water spilled on shavings or paper makes the litter wet and hard to keep clean. Set the base on a level spot, away from the litter where you can, and the bedding stays drier for longer.
This base suits a small brooder or a starter setup. It's the piece you add when you want a steady supply in a small space, and it sits well next to a feeder base so the chicks have food and water in the same corner.
Galvanized steel resists rust better than plain steel, but it still needs to be dried after washing so moisture doesn't sit on the metal between uses.

How to use it
Set it up before the chicks arrive so the water is ready on day one:
- Fill a Little Giant screw-on jar or a standard Mason jar with fresh water.
- Screw the base onto the jar.
- Turn the waterer over and set it on a level spot in the cooler end of the brooder.
- Check the water level each morning and evening and refill the jar before it runs out.
- Wash the jar and base with warm water, then dry them before you refill.
Good to know
- Pair the base with a matching feeder base so the chicks have food and water in one corner.
- Keep a spare jar on hand so you never run a brooder dry.
- Move the chicks up to a larger waterer as they grow, and keep this base for the brooder.
- Replace the base if the galvanizing wears off, or if the steel rusts, bends or cracks.
