The first weeks in the brooder are about getting feed to young birds without losing half of it to the litter. This base turns a 1-quart screw-on jar into a gravity feeder for baby chicks and small birds. Eight openings give several birds room to eat at the same time.

Ribs around the openings catch feed that would otherwise spill when birds scratch and crowd. The base is 6.375 inches across and 2.5 inches high, so it sits low and stays steady on the brooder floor. It's made of heavy-duty polypropylene that handles the damp, dusty work of a brooder and a regular wash.

Highlights

  • Turns a screw-on jar into a gravity feeder
  • Eight openings for several birds at once
  • Ribs help keep feed in the base
  • Heavy-duty polypropylene for brooder use
  • Low, steady base at 6.375 inches across
  • Base only, so pair it with your jar

Why a gravity feeder beats a dish in the brooder

Young birds peck at whatever is in front of them, and a flat dish gets kicked, scratched and filled with shavings in no time. A gravity feeder keeps the feed in the jar and lets it fall into the base as it's eaten, so the feeding area stays fuller and cleaner for longer.

Eight openings matter when several birds share a brooder. A single opening means one bird eats while the rest crowd in. Multiple openings give the whole group a place to eat without shoving.

The ribs are the part you'll appreciate as the birds grow. Scratching birds kick feed over the rim, and the ribs slow that spill so more of the feed stays in the base.

This base suits a brooder, a starter pen or a small flock that eats from a jar. Because it sits low, young birds can reach it easily, and the wide base helps keep the feeder from tipping when a bird bumps it.

How to use it

Set the feeder up in the brooder in a few steps:

  1. Fill the 1-quart screw-on jar with feed.
  2. Screw the base onto the jar.
  3. Turn the assembly over onto level ground where the birds can reach the openings from all sides.
  4. Check the feed each morning and top up the jar before it runs out.
  5. When you clean the brooder, brush out spilled feed and wash the base with warm soapy water.

Good to know

  • The base is sold on its own, so pair it with the matching 1-quart screw-on jar you already use.
  • Keep one base for each jar you use in the brooder.
  • Clean the base before each new batch of birds, so old feed and droppings don't carry over.
  • Keep feed dry. Damp feed can spoil and mold, and a moldy feeder is worse than an empty one.
