Chicks need steady warmth while they feather out, and a brooder lamp is how most keepers give it to them. This 250-watt, 120-volt red bulb is designed to provide heat for small flocks, and it works for other poultry as well.

The alloy bulb has a non-stick base and is built for a 6000-hour bulb life, so you can count on it through a long brooding season.

Red light is a long-standing brooder choice. Many keepers pick it because it tends to calm chicks and cut down on pecking compared with bright white light, which keeps the brooder a quieter place for the flock.

Why a heat bulb in the brooder

Chicks cluster under the heat when they're cold and spread out when they're comfortable. A brooder lamp gives them a warm spot to go to, so they can move between warm and cool areas as they need to.

A single bulb suits a small flock. For a bigger group, run more than one lamp so every part of the brooder has room for birds to stretch out. Plan the layout before the chicks arrive.

Heat lamps need adjusting as the chicks grow. Raise the lamp gradually as the birds feather out, and read their behavior. Crowding under the lamp means it's too cold. Panting or spreading far from the light means it's too warm.

How to set up the lamp

  1. With the power off, screw the bulb into a fixture rated for it.
  2. Hang the lamp over one end of the brooder so chicks can move away from the heat.
  3. Watch the chicks, and raise or lower the lamp to adjust the warmth.

Check the fixture's wattage rating before you install the bulb, and keep it clear of bedding and paper.

Good to know

  • Keep a spare bulb on hand so a burned-out bulb never leaves chicks cold.
  • Unplug the lamp and let the bulb cool before you wipe off the dust, and check the cord for wear.
  • Keep feed and feeders away from the heat.
  • Pair the lamp with a waterer on the cool side of the brooder, so chicks can drink without crowding the heat.
