A dry, fresh bed makes a kennel or stall a better place to spend the night, and it keeps the whole barn smelling cleaner. This all-natural Eastern red cedar bedding soaks up moisture and gives the space a clean, woodsy scent you notice the moment you open the door. The kiln-dried shavings absorb twice their weight, so wet spots stay small and easy to pull out before they spread.

The bedding is 99% dust-free, which matters for dogs and horses that spend their days breathing in the barn, and for anyone who has coughed through a dusty load of shavings. Use it in a dog run, a horse stall or a small pet enclosure and you get one product that works across all of them. Fresh cedar under a clean bed is a simple way to keep the spot your animals use most feeling like home.

Why cedar for kennels and stalls

Pine shavings are the usual choice in most barns, and plenty of people never try anything else. Cedar earns a place for a few practical reasons. Its scent is strong and clean, which covers the everyday smell of a kennel or stall between full changes. It is an all-natural wood, so the bedding your dog sleeps on or your horse lies down on is simply wood with nothing added to it.

Cedar also works well as a top layer. Many horse owners spread it over their regular bedding in the spots that stay damp, which adds absorbency where it is needed without changing the whole stall. For dogs, a layer of cedar under a bed keeps the kennel fresher between cleanings. It suits a backyard with one dog, a boarding barn with a full row of stalls, or a small animal setup that needs an easy routine.

How to use it

Set up the enclosure the same way each time, and the bedding lasts longer between full changes.

  1. Cover the floor with 3 to 4 inches of loose bedding.
  2. Freshen dog kennels and horse stalls every day, pulling out wet and soiled spots.
  3. Change the bedding weekly. Remove all of it, clean the enclosure and lay down fresh shavings.
  4. Change dog beds on the same weekly schedule so no bed sits on old bedding.

Good to know

  • Keep a second load on hand for the week you have three wet stalls, so you never run short mid-cleanup.
  • Pair cedar with a sturdy muck tub or wheelbarrow, so the wet bedding goes out the same day it comes out.
  • Store unopened bedding dry and off the concrete so the shavings stay in good shape until you need them.
  • Give the enclosure a full scrub when you change the bedding, and let it dry before the new layer goes down.

Freshen up the kennel this weekend and keep the next load ready before the hot months arrive.
