Every horse sweats, not just the ones in work. A long trailer ride, a hot afternoon or a stressful day pulls water and minerals out fast. Apple Elite Electrolyte Paste replaces sodium chloride, potassium, magnesium and calcium lost through sweat, and the apple flavor means most horses take it without a fight.

It also encourages healthy water intake year-round, which matters in winter when horses drink less. A horse that is short on minerals can go off feed and water, and then the next hard day is harder than it needed to be. A dose on the way to the show helps replace what the day takes out.

Highlights

  • Replaces electrolytes lost through sweat
  • Encourages healthy water intake year-round
  • Sodium chloride, potassium, magnesium and calcium
  • Apple flavor most horses take readily
  • Can be given up to 12 hours before exercise or travel

Why electrolytes belong in the tack room

Electrolytes matter most when the horse is sweating hardest, but the paste form is handy for the moments that come up fast. Give a dose at the trailer or the trail head, without measuring out a powder and mixing it into a bucket on a hot day. The tube fits a saddlebag, a trailer box or a tack trunk.

Who it suits: a weekend trail rider, a show horse, a ranch horse on long days, or a horse that is trailered to a new place every few weeks. The formula suits horses of any age and workload.

How to use it

Give the following amounts per day, and always keep water in front of your horse.

  1. Maintenance or light exercise: 15 to 25 cc per day.
  2. Light sweating (neck, under saddle): 20 to 45 cc per day.
  3. Moderate sweating (whole body): 30 to 45 cc per day.
  4. Heavy sweating (whole body, dripping): 60 cc per day.

Give it in increments of about 20 cc so less gets dropped from the mouth. It can be given every 4 to 6 hours if needed, and up to 12 hours before exercise or travel to help minimize electrolyte loss.

Good to know

  • Keep a tube in the trailer and one in your saddlebag so a long haul never catches you empty-handed.
  • Cold weather counts too. Horses drink less in the short days of winter, so electrolytes help when the water bucket goes slow.
  • On the road, offer water at every stop and let the paste do its part to keep your horse drinking.
  • A clean, full water bucket is the other half of the job, at home and on the trailer.
