Bounce Back is the powder to have on hand when a calf starts scouring, a foal gets stressed on the trailer, or the heat settles over the pig pen. It's a concentrated nutritional supplement that dissolves in warm water and brings dextrose, salt, sodium and potassium together with glycine, which is included for electrolyte absorption.

It works across the place. Cattle and calves, horses and foals, goats and kids, sheep and lambs, fawns and elk calves, llamas, alpacas and crias, and adult and baby pigs all have their own mixing and feeding directions. The powder turns light blue when it is mixed properly, so you can tell at a glance that the solution is ready.

Highlights

  • Concentrated nutritional supplement for many kinds of stock
  • Glycine included for electrolyte absorption
  • For stress or dehydration
  • Dissolves in warm water and turns light blue when mixed properly
  • Mixed with warm water, never into milk or milk replacer

Why an electrolyte powder beats plain water in a crisis

Plain water doesn't replace what an animal loses. Scours, a hard trailer ride or a hot day in the pen can take salt, sodium and potassium out of the body, and a solution with those minerals in it gives the animal something to take back. Bounce Back is built for that job, and the glycine is there to support electrolyte absorption.

Young stock are the main users. A calf or a lamb on milk or milk replacer already has a routine, and a mix of this powder fits between feedings. The directions are clear about keeping the regular milk replacer going, so the powder supports the routine instead of replacing it.

It's a good fit for the calving pen, the foaling stall, the kidding area, the trailer kit and the pig pen in August. Keep one on the shelf, so you aren't running to town at two in the morning when a young animal needs it.

How to mix and feed it

Add the powder to warm water and stir until it dissolves completely. Don't mix it into milk or milk replacer, and don't stop the regular milk replacer feedings. Discard any unused solution after 24 hours. Four cups make a quart, and four quarts make a gallon.

  • Calf: using the enclosed scoop, mix 4 level measures into 2 quarts of warm water. Depending on the severity of scours and the level of dehydration, bottle-feed 2 quarts of solution 1 to 3 times daily between regular milk replacer feedings.
  • Foal: using the enclosed scoop, mix 4 level measures into 2 quarts of warm water. Offer 1 1/2 to 2 quarts for each 100 pounds of body weight, twice daily, from a bottle or an open pail secured at chest height.
  • Lamb or goat kid: using the enclosed scoop, mix 1 level measure into 2 cups of warm water. Offer 1/2 cup for each 6 pounds of body weight, twice daily from a bottle, or free-choice from a feeder.
  • Baby pig: using the enclosed scoop, mix 1 level measure into 2 cups of warm water. Offer it in a free-choice feeder for 1 to 2 days during weaning, hot weather or stress.
  • Cria, fawn or elk calf: using the enclosed scoop, mix 1 level measure into 2 cups of warm water. Offer 1/2 cup for each 6 pounds of body weight, twice daily from a bottle, or free-choice.
  • Adult cattle, sheep, goats, horses, llamas, alpacas or pigs: using the enclosed scoop, mix 4 level measures into 2 gallons of warm water. Offer it free choice from a pail during stress or transport, as the only source of drinking water for 1 hour, 2 to 3 times daily.

The enclosed scoop holds approximately 1 ounce of dry powder by weight. Male elk and deer that are bottle-fed should be castrated to help prevent dangerous aggressive behavior.

Good to know

  • Mix a fresh batch when you need it. Once it is in water, the solution doesn't keep, so discard what you don't use within 24 hours.
  • Keep the dry powder in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry spot, away from insects and rodents.
  • Scours in young stock is a reason to call the vet early, not after the animal is down. The powder supports the animal while you get help on the way.
  • Pair it with clean buckets and a bottle set, so the mix is easy to offer at every feeding.
