Decker Finishing Brush

The last pass is the one people see. After the curry and the body brush have done the heavy lifting, the Decker Finishing Brush goes over the coat with soft, 2-inch synthetic bristles and picks up the dust and stray hairs left behind. The result is a coat that lies flat and shines instead of one that still looks dusty at the shoulder.

The synthetic block measures 8-1/2 inches long by 2-3/8 inches wide, so it sits in your hand with enough room to work a quick flick down the neck and over the hindquarters without wearing your wrist out. Soft bristles make it a good choice for the horses that flinch at a stiff brush, and for the thin-skinned spots on the face and flanks. Aqua teal bristles show the dirt, so you know when it is time for a wash.

• Work it over the coat after the curry and body brush, when the loose dirt is already up and the finishing brush can sweep it off clean.
• Flick with the direction of the hair, light pressure only. The soft bristles do the work.
• Knock the bristles out against a fence rail after each use and wash the block in mild soap when the teal starts looking gray.
• Keep a second one in the trailer or show box so the last pass before the ring does not depend on remembering the grooming tote.
