Hackamore with Rawhide Bosal & Nylon Mecate

For starting a colt, or for a horse that rides easier without a bit in his mouth, this set puts the whole hackamore in your hands: bosal, hanger and mecate, already matched to each other. The rawhide bosal has smooth edges and even sizing, so it sits clean across the nose instead of rubbing a green horse's face raw. The hanger is 5/8" buttered latigo leather.

The mecate is 1/2" braided nylon, 23 feet of it, so you get a rein, a lead and a get-down rope off the same line. A rawhide button and horsehair tassel finish one end, and a bleeding heart knot ties off the other.

Highlights

• 5/8" buttered latigo leather bosal hanger
• 23-foot braided nylon mecate doubles as rein and lead
• Rawhide button and horsehair tassel on one end
• Bleeding heart knot on the other end

At a glance

Good to know

• Keep the rawhide bosal shaped between rides so it holds its form instead of flattening out in the tack room.
• Wipe the latigo down after a sweaty ride and let it air dry away from direct heat so the leather stays supple.
• Hang the mecate loose rather than coiled tight so the nylon doesn't take a set.
• Check the hanger before every ride and adjust so the bosal sits level on the nose.

Have it ready before the colt's first ride and skip the bit entirely.
