Piglets come into the world short on iron, and sow's milk cannot fill the gap. Iron-100 is a sterile injectable solution of iron hydrogenated dextran that carries 100 mg of elemental iron in every 1 mL. It is used for the prevention and treatment of anemia due to iron deficiency in baby pigs, and getting that iron into each pig on schedule is part of raising a healthy litter.
The solution is quick to absorb and draws up and injects smoothly, so you can dose each pig without a fight at the rail. One clean needle and syringe per pig keeps the job quick and sanitary from the first shot to the last.
Highlights
- Prevention and treatment of anemia from iron deficiency in baby pigs
- 100 mg of iron in each 1 mL dose
- Quick absorption so the iron gets to work
- Draws and injects smoothly
- Sterile solution for intramuscular injection only
- Approved for piglets
Why iron matters for baby pigs
Iron deficiency anemia shows up early in a litter. As pigs grow, their blood volume climbs fast, and the iron they were born with runs thin within the first few days. Without an outside source of iron, many newborn pigs can develop anemia in that window, and anemia slows growth and can lower a pig's defenses against disease.
An injection is a common way to get that iron in on time. The shot takes seconds and does not depend on a pig finding its way to a feed trough at the right moment.
Who it suits: a farrowing operation with a regular schedule, a few sows in a backyard pen, or a hobby breeder who wants a bottle on hand before the first litter arrives.

How to use it
For intramuscular injection only. Dose by age and by whether you are preventing or treating:
- Prevention: 1 mL (100 mg iron) at 2 to 4 days of age.
- Treatment: 1 mL (100 mg iron). Treatment may be repeated in 10 days.
Inject into the back ham about half an inch deep, pulling the skin and fat down to tense the spot first. Disinfect the rubber stopper and the injection site, and use a 20 gauge, 5/8 inch needle. Use a clean, sterile needle and syringe for each pig to avoid spreading infection.
Good to know
- Time the first shot for 2 to 4 days of age, while the pig is small and easy to handle.
- Keep a bottle on the shelf before farrowing so the iron is on hand the day the litter arrives.
- Write the dosing dates on the farrowing board so every pig in the litter gets its shot on time.
