Copper sulfate algaecide for pool algae prevention and severe algae treatment.

Algae control for pool water

PacifiClear 3-Month Algaecide is a liquid copper sulfate product for preventing algae growth or treating severe algae. The active ingredient is copper sulfate pentahydrate at 11.8%, equivalent to 3.0% elemental copper. It is an algaecide, not a pool sanitizer. Maintain adequate levels of an EPA-registered sanitizer, such as chlorine, to control bacteria. Maintain sanitizer separately and use its own label and test method.

Choose the correct treatment rate

The maintenance dose is 16 fluid ounces per 10,000 gallons every three months. For severe algae, use 32 fluid ounces per 10,000 gallons. Calculate pool volume before measuring. Do not estimate by surface area or pour an arbitrary amount into the water. Maintain pH from 7.2 to 7.8 and total alkalinity from 80 to 120 ppm. These water-balance targets accompany the algaecide treatment and help the pool system operate as intended.

Circulation and brushing matter

Confirm that the filtration system works and that the filtration cycle is adequate. Brush the pool regularly. Add the measured amount directly to the deep end, preferably in front of a water return, where circulation can carry it through the pool. For plaster finishes, dilute the product in a bucket of pool water before addition. These are distinct methods for different pool surfaces; follow the plaster-specific step rather than applying concentrate directly to the finish.

Protect fish and waterways

Copper in treated pool water is toxic to fish. Do not discharge treated effluent into lakes, ponds, or public water. Before draining or backwashing, choose a disposal route that does not send treated water into those waters.

Consider foam and surface care

Copper-based algaecides are a non-foaming option compared with simple quat algaecides, which can create foam. Copper products have a different tradeoff: improper use can stain pool surfaces. Measure the labeled amount and keep water balance within the specified range. For severe algae, adjust pH to 7.2. In plaster pools, dilute this product in a bucket of pool water before adding it to the deep end.
