Sodium bicarbonate granules for raising measured total alkalinity in pool water.
Correct the alkalinity reading
Total alkalinity helps steady pH against sudden swings. When it is too low, pH can move quickly and the water may become more corrosive to pool surfaces or equipment. This product raises total alkalinity with sodium bicarbonate. Test the water first and compare the result with the target range for your pool. Do not use it to correct a pH reading by itself. Alkalinity and pH are connected, but they are separate measurements and need separate decisions.
Calculate the change you need
A starting measure is 1.5 pounds per 10,000 gallons to raise total alkalinity by 10 ppm. Scale the amount to pool volume and the difference between the test result and the target. For instance, a 20,000-gallon pool needing a 20 ppm increase uses four times that reference amount. Weigh the granules rather than estimating by scoop. Smaller adjustments are easier to assess and reduce the chance of overshooting the target.
Retest before making another change
After adding alkalinity increaser, test total alkalinity again and check pH as well. Sodium bicarbonate has only a minor effect on pH, but the readings still belong together in a water-balance record. Write down pool capacity, the starting results, amount applied, and the next test. If pH continues to move after alkalinity is corrected, investigate other causes instead of adding more bicarbonate automatically. Water source, sanitizer additions, and recent refill water can affect what the next test shows. Sodium bicarbonate is the alkalinity adjuster; sodium carbonate is the separate pH Plus product, so a low alkalinity result alone does not call for a pH increaser.
Keep dust and moisture under control
The granules can create dust during handling. Avoid breathing it, protect your eyes, and wash your hands after measuring. Keep the pail closed and dry, away from acids. Do not combine pool chemicals or mix concentrated products. Follow the pail directions for application and circulation, then retest before making a second correction. Store chemicals in their original containers where they stay dry and separate from incompatible products.
Product analysis
Granular pool alkalinity increaser. Formula: sodium bicarbonate.
Directions for use
1.5 pounds of Alkalinity Increaser per 10,000 gallons of water will raise alkalinity 10 ppm.
Total alkalinity should be maintained between 100 ppm and 150 ppm. Minor affect on pH.
Cautions
Breathing dust may cause coughing or difficulty breathing. Direct eye contact may cause irritation, reddening, or tearing. Direct skin contact may cause irritation. Wear protective gloves and eye protection. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location. Keep away from acids and water.
FIRST AID: Eyes: Immediately rinse eyes with water. Remove any contact lenses, and continue flushing with running water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation develops or persists. Skin or clothing: Wash affected areas with plenty of water, and soap if available, for several minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation develops or persists. Inhaled: Remove from area to fresh air. Seek medical attention if respiratory irritation develops or if breathing becomes difficult. Swallowed: May cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Large doses may cause alkalosis. Seek medical attention if feeling unwell. Have the product container or label with you when calling a poison control center or doctor, or going for treatment.
