Granular sodium bisulfate for lowering pool or spa pH.

Start with a water test

pH Minus is a granular pool and spa acid for lowering high pH. Test the water before deciding whether to use it. Keep pool pH in the 7.0 to 7.8 range. Above 7.8, scale, calcium deposits, and cloudy water can become problems. pH and total alkalinity are separate readings. This product lowers both, so check them separately and keep a record of each result. A pH test alone cannot tell you whether alkalinity also needs correction. Check chlorine and pH at least twice daily, then test more often during heavy use.

A dry acid for measured adjustment

The fast-dissolving granules are made with sodium bisulfate. At 2.5 lb, its acid strength is equivalent to one quart of muriatic acid. That is not a pool-volume dose. Water volume and its existing balance affect how much adjustment is needed. Use the amount and application method printed on the current container for your pool or spa, then retest rather than adding more by guesswork.

Keep pH in the chlorine routine

pH management is part of sanitizer control. High pH can reduce chlorine's ability to kill germs, while water below pH 7 can corrode pipes. Test chlorine as well as pH and follow the operating range for your pool system. If a reading is outside range, correct the measured condition in the order and manner on the product directions. Cloudy water or scale can have more than one cause, so do not treat appearance alone as a dose calculation.

Check the readings with a reliable kit

A DPD kit gives more accurate chlorine and pH results than test strips. Very high chlorine, usually above 10 ppm, can bleach the DPD sample and produce a false low or zero result. That can look like a chlorine shortage even when the water has excess chlorine. Check the kit instructions for a high-range procedure, or dilute the sample as directed, before treating an unexpectedly low result. Track pH and chlorine separately; one result cannot stand in for the other.
