10% sodium hypochlorite liquid for pool water chlorination and shock treatment.

A liquid chlorine source

Pool Essentials Chlorinating Liquid contains 10% sodium hypochlorite. It is a liquid source of unstabilized chlorine for swimming pool water. Chlorine demand changes with sunlight, pool use, rain, temperature, and organic debris. Use a reliable pool test kit to measure free available chlorine rather than estimating a dose from water appearance. Measure the pool volume and use the amount that corresponds to the desired residual, starting from a current test result.

Use the routine rate as a starting point

Add 13 fluid ounces per 10,000 gallons to yield about 1 ppm available chlorine. Maintain 1 to 3 ppm in unstabilized pools and 1 to 1.5 ppm in stabilized pools. Those figures describe the measured chlorine residual, not a fixed amount to add every day. The liquid loses strength as it ages, so test and increase the amount as needed to reach the required level. Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6 and alkalinity between 50 and 100 ppm.

For startup or a chlorine boost

For startup or superchlorination, use 64 to 128 fluid ounces per 10,000 gallons to produce a 5 to 10 ppm residual. Do not enter the pool until the residual falls below 4 ppm. Add at night with the pump and filter running, then test in the morning and adjust if needed. The test result matters because the target residual depends on the actual water volume and chlorine demand.

Winterize only clear water

For winterizing, treat clear, clean water with 40 fluid ounces per 10,000 gallons while the filter runs. Test to confirm a 3 ppm residual. Cover the pool after treatment and prepare the heater, filter, and related equipment according to their manufacturers’ instructions. Do not substitute the winterizing dose for routine chlorination or shock treatment. The goal and initial water condition are different.

Protect people and equipment

This is a corrosive product that can damage eyes and skin. Wear safety glasses or goggles and rubber gloves, wash after handling, avoid breathing vapors, and leave a poorly ventilated area until vapors have cleared. Keep liquid chlorine separate from acids, ammonia, detergents, organic waste, and other pool products. Mixing can release chlorine gas. Direct contact can bleach vinyl, metal, fiberglass, painted surfaces, or colored plaster, so dilute and apply only as directed. The liquid is toxic to fish and aquatic organisms. Keep it out of surface waters and store the closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sun and heat.
