One 12.5 lb bag of Y-Tex PYthon II Dust for use as livestock insecticide dust. Its EPA-accepted label covers forced-use dust bags and direct treatment on cattle, sheep, goats and horses.

Use it with a dust bag

PYthon II Dust is a dry insecticide formulated for cattle, sheep, goats and horses. In a forced-use dust-bag setup, the label directs the handler to place the dust in a commercially available bag and hang it in a gateway or lane animals must pass daily for water, feed or minerals. That makes it useful where animals already travel through a narrow route. The bag must be positioned so the animal contacts the dust. For cattle, the label gives a height of four to six inches below the backline. Do not hang a self-treating bag as an optional, free-choice station.

The label covers direct application too

The EPA label also allows application with a shaker can, dusting glove or mechanical dust applicator. It says not to use power-duster equipment. Direct treatment covers the head, ears, neck, shoulders, back and tailhead, with a separate instruction for spinose ear ticks. The allowed amount and repeat interval are limited by the label. Read the complete directions before deciding whether dust-bag treatment or direct application fits the animals and the setup. The product is for outdoor use only.

Pest targets and formula

The label lists control of horn flies, lice, ticks and keds, with aid in controlling face flies, stable flies and other nuisance flies. The formula contains 0.038% zeta-cypermethrin and 0.150% piperonyl butoxide. The manufacturer describes the two ingredients as a combined insecticide dust for livestock ectoparasites. This is a pesticide, so the label is the controlling guide for species, placement, amount, weather and handling. Do not use it as a general barn or premise dust.

Check restrictions before use

Do not use the dust concurrently with insecticide ear tags containing zeta-cypermethrin or cypermethrin. Do not apply during rain or when rain is expected before the product has at least four hours to dry. The label calls for gloves, long sleeves, long pants, socks and shoes, and gives separate first-aid instructions for skin exposure. It also warns that the product is extremely toxic to aquatic organisms. Keep dust away from drains and surface water. Store it in a cool, dry place, away from food and feed.

Choose the right package

This listing represents one 12.5 lb refill bag. Y-Tex and distributors also sell kits and multi-bag packages, which are different sale units. Confirm the option before ordering. After opening, keep the product in its original package and follow the label’s storage and disposal directions. Never reuse the non-refillable container, and do not put unused product down an indoor or outdoor drain.

Composition and registered use

EPA Reg. No. 39039-31, YT-16D08 Livestock Insecticide Dust, alternate brand PYthon II Livestock Insecticide Dust. Active ingredients: zeta-cypermethrin, S-enantiomer 0.038%; piperonyl butoxide 0.150%; other ingredients 99.812%; total 100%. The label identifies use on lactating and non-lactating dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goats and horses. This is an outdoor-use-only dust. The EPA-accepted label does not state a restricted-use classification. The retail unit here is one 12.5 lb refill bag; do not substitute a kit, bucket or 2-bag package.

Directions for use

It is a violation of federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. Apply only outdoors. For beef and dairy cattle, sheep, goats and horses, the label permits a dust bag, shaker can, dusting glove or mechanical dust applicator. Do not use concurrently with insecticide ear tags containing zeta-cypermethrin or cypermethrin. Do not apply with power duster equipment. Do not enter or allow others to enter until dusts have settled.

Self-treating forced-use dust bag, horn flies, lice and face flies: Place contents of package in a commercially available dust bag. Suspend it in gateways or lanes animals must pass daily for water, feed or minerals. Do not allow free-choice use. For dairy cows, the bag may be suspended at the milking-barn exit. Hang it 4–6 inches below cattle backline. For face fly reduction, force daily use and hang the bag so the face is dusted.

Direct application: For horn flies, lice, face flies, stable flies, ticks and keds, apply up to 2 oz (4 tablespoons) per animal evenly over the hair of the head, ears, neck, shoulders, back and tailhead. For spinose ear ticks, apply about 1/3 oz (2/3 tablespoon) inside each ear. For stable flies, also apply to legs. Repeat only as necessary and no more often than once in 3 days. Do not apply during rain or if rainfall is expected before the product has at least 4 hours to dry. Rain within 24 hours may cause unintended runoff. Follow the full label and its resistance-management recommendations.

Cautions

Signal word: CAUTION. Keep out of reach of children. Harmful if absorbed through skin. Avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing. Wear long-sleeved shirt, long pants, chemical-resistant gloves made of any waterproof material, socks and shoes. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling and before eating, drinking, chewing gum, using tobacco or using the toilet. Remove and wash contaminated clothing before reuse. Keep PPE separate from other laundry; use detergent and hot water. Remove PPE immediately after handling, wash thoroughly and change into clean clothing. Discard clothing and absorbent materials heavily contaminated with concentrate. First aid, skin or clothing: Take off contaminated clothing, rinse skin immediately with plenty of water for 15–20 minutes, and call a poison control center or doctor for treatment advice. This product contains a pyrethroid; transient tingling or numbness, usually of the face, may follow skin contact and normally subsides without treatment. For medical emergencies call Chem-Tel at 1-800-255-3924; have the product container or label available. The pesticide is extremely toxic to aquatic organisms. Do not let it enter storm drains, drainage ditches, gutters or surface water. Applying in calm weather when rain is not predicted for 24 hours helps reduce drift or runoff. Do not contaminate water, food or feed in storage or disposal. Store in a cool, dry place. Waste may be disposed of on site or at an approved waste facility. The non-refillable container must not be reused or refilled. If empty, place in trash or offer for recycling if available. If partly filled, call the local solid-waste agency or 1-800-CLEANUP. Never place unused product down any indoor or outdoor drain. See the full label for all directions and requirements.
