An annual seed blend for establishing tall, layered cover around stand routes, duck blinds, and wildlife funnels.
Create a screen along the route to your stand
Donkey Screen is an annual food plot blend for planting seasonal cover where you want to break up a sightline. A strip along the walk to a stand can help conceal movement through an exposed area. A planting beside a duck blind can make the blind less visible against open ground. In a field, the cover can help shape a natural funnel. Sorghum sudangrass, Egyptian wheat, and WGF sorghum mature at different heights, giving the planting a layered look instead of a single even surface.
Plan for seasonal cover, not a permanent barrier
Because this is an annual planting, plan it as part of a seasonal setup. Choose a location where growing vegetation will provide the concealment you need, and consider how people will move around the plot while it develops. The blend can grow 8 to 12 feet tall, with stated coverage up to a quarter acre per package. Actual results depend on site conditions and establishment, so treat coverage as a planning guide. The blend creates cover during its growing season; it is not a permanent screen.
Prepare the ground before spreading seed
Good establishment starts before planting. Test the soil and correct fertility for the site before planting. Prepare a firm seedbed, especially when broadcasting, so seed can contact soil. After broadcasting, cultipacking or dragging helps settle seed into the prepared ground. Nitrogen fertilizer is also a key part of successful establishment. Plan these steps alongside the location and planting method.
Match the planting approach to the area
Select the drilling or broadcasting rate that matches your equipment and seedbed. Drilling places seed in rows; broadcasting distributes it over the surface and needs good soil contact afterward. Work out the intended area before opening the package and spread seed consistently. For a route, plan the length and width needed to interrupt the view. For a blind or funnel, position cover where it fits the layout. Mapping the plot first also helps keep seed focused on the places where concealment matters through the season as plants grow.
Planting directions
Donkey Screen can be drilled at 15lbs per acre and broadcasted at 20lbs per acre. For best results, we always recommend getting a soil test done and getting your fertility right. A well-prepared seed bed is a must as well, especially when broadcasting. Culitpacking or dragging after broadcasting is very important to have proper seed to soil contact. Nitrogen fertilizer is also a key factor in a successful Donkey Screen plot.
