A single-ply nylon off billet connects a Western saddle’s rigging to the cinch, with a three-hole tie for adjustment.

The offside saddle connection

An off billet is the strap on the saddle’s offside that links its rigging to the cinch. It is separate from the cinch itself, which passes under the horse, and from the near-side latigo used to tighten the saddle. This 39-inch replacement is single-ply nylon, 1-3/4 inches wide, and has a three-hole tie with a burgundy latigo leather tie. Knowing which strap is being replaced helps avoid ordering a cinch or a near-side tie by mistake.

Good to know

Before removing a worn billet, note how it passes through the saddle’s rigging and where its end meets the cinch. Lay the old strap flat and compare its width and length with this 1-3/4-by-39-inch pattern. Hardware slots and keepers vary between saddles. The replacement should follow the same path without twisting, bunching under the skirt or forcing a tie into a slot that was not made for it. If the original route is unclear, have an experienced saddle fitter identify the connection before riding.

Tie and connection points

The three-hole tie provides a small set of attachment positions at the rigging end, while the leather tie completes that connection. Use the opening and attachment arrangement that matches the saddle already in use. Once routed, lay the nylon flat and check that the buckle or cinch-end connection is seated. A billet carries tension each time the saddle is secured, so a correct path matters more than pulling the strap as tight as possible while installing it.

Inspect before riding

Run a hand along the nylon to feel for cuts, fraying or stiff spots. Check the stitching and the burgundy leather tie, especially at bends and holes where tension concentrates. Replace a strap with damaged load-bearing stitching rather than relying on a knot or extra tightening. After the saddle is secured, walk the horse and look at the fit again before riding. Gradual tightening and a recheck after movement help reveal a connection that has shifted under the saddle.
