Give your roses, flowers, shrubs and vegetables a nitrogen source that releases slowly and keeps working through the season. Blood meal is a granular fertilizer with a 12-0-0 analysis, and it aids top growth and deep green foliage.

Spread it in beds, along rows, around pansies or at the base of a shrub. It is an easy way to give a garden a steady supply of nitrogen.

Highlights

  • Slow-release natural nitrogen
  • For roses, flowers, trees and shrubs
  • Suitable for vegetables
  • Aids top growth and deep green foliage
  • Granular and easy to spread

Why nitrogen matters in the garden

Nitrogen is the nutrient plants use to build leaves and stems. When a bed runs short, growth slows and the foliage turns pale. A slow-release source feeds over time, so the plant gets nitrogen as the soil works on it rather than all at once.

Blood meal is a dried animal product high in nitrogen. Soil microbes break it down gradually, and warm weather speeds the process, so it suits the growing season from spring into fall. Compared with a fast-acting fertilizer, it is less likely to push tender growth in one burst.

Who it suits: the gardener with a rose bed, a border of annuals, a row of vegetables or a line of shrubs who wants a natural nitrogen feed. A soil test from your county extension office shows your pH, phosphorus and potassium, so you know what else the bed needs alongside the nitrogen.

How to use it

Apply at the rate for your planting, then water it in. Keep granules off leaves and flowers.

  1. Beds and bed plantings: 2 lbs per 100 square feet of planting area, about a 10 by 10 foot bed.
  2. Rows: 2 lbs per 100 feet of row. Scatter it over about six inches on either side of the row and water it in.
  3. Pansies: 1 lb to every 25 plants. Sprinkle lightly on the soil around them and water well.
  4. Individual plants or shrubs: 1/4 cup per 9 square feet (3 by 3 feet) of planting area. Broadcast evenly under the branches, scratch lightly into the soil and water in.
  5. Wash off any granules that land on leaves and flowers, then water the bed.

Good to know

  • Water in after spreading so the nitrogen moves toward the roots instead of sitting on the surface.
  • Do not overfeed. Too much nitrogen gives lush leaves with fewer blooms, and a heavy pile of granules can burn tender roots.
  • For flowering plants and fruiting vegetables, pair nitrogen with a fertilizer that also supplies phosphorus and potassium, since plants use all three.
  • Keep the bag closed and dry so the granules pour freely when you need them.
