Mix the spray as the water flows

The Chapin G390 attaches to a garden hose and draws the prepared mixture from its bottle as water passes through the spray head. Its 32-ounce bottle can produce up to 20 gallons of finished spray. That is the mixed-spray capacity, rather than the amount the bottle itself holds. Use it for compatible water-soluble garden products when a hose-end application suits the product directions.

Measure for the finished gallons

Read the chemical directions before preparing the bottle. Measure the amount of product required for the number of finished gallons you want, then add water in the bottle to the corresponding gallon mark. Mix well. Dry powder and thick liquid products must dissolve completely to avoid clogging. The bottle marks account for the water added through the hose, so use the finished-gallon method rather than filling the bottle with straight concentrate.

An example of the mixing method

If the chemical calls for one tablespoon per gallon and you need 10 gallons of finished spray, put 10 tablespoons of chemical in the bottle. Add water to the 10-gallon mark on the bottle and mix. This is an example of the sprayer method. Your actual product rate must come from the directions for the chemical being applied.

Choose a fan or a direct stream

Attach the deflector for a fan spray over lawns or shrubs. Remove the deflector for a jet stream where the application calls for it. Thread the prepared bottle onto the head and connect the head to the hose. For correct mixing, the control valve must be fully open while spraying. Push it forward to start the spray and pull it back fully to stop. The sprayer includes an anti-siphon feature to help prevent backflow.

Clean it after every application

Wear eye protection and do not spray during windy conditions. Follow the chemical precautions for the job. Clean the bottle and sprayer thoroughly afterward so residue does not contaminate a different chemical on the next use. Rinse the bottle, refill it with water and spray clear water through the head. Its polyethylene construction is chemical-resistant and rustproof, but cleaning still matters after every use.
