Rubber replacement washers help seal garden-hose and washing-machine hose connections against drips.

Check the washer when a connection drips

A leak at a hose connection can come from the small washer inside the female fitting. These Danco rubber washers provide a positive seal where the two fittings meet. They are intended for garden hoses and washing-machine hoses that use the compatible connection. Replacing a worn washer is a straightforward place to start when the hose itself is sound and water is escaping at the joint.

Match the washer to the connection

The washers are designed for compatibility with 5/8-inch hose. Check the fitting that needs repair before opening the package. The washer belongs inside the connection, seated against the fitting surface. Its job is to create the seal when the connection is assembled. A hose size and the washer seat are different things, so compare the replacement with the washer and seat in the connection you are repairing.

Rubber construction

Rubber provides the sealing material in these washers. Keep a few with your hose fittings so a damaged seal does not stop the next watering job. They are small enough to store beside the coupling parts rather than leaving them loose at the bottom of a tool drawer. Keep unused washers together in their packaging so they are easy to identify when you need another replacement.

Prepare the joint before installing

Turn off the water and release pressure before separating a hose connection. Remove the old washer and check that fragments have not stayed in the seat. Look at the surrounding fitting for obvious damage, since a fresh washer cannot replace a broken connection. Seat the replacement flat in the female fitting. A washer caught on the threads or sitting at an angle needs to be repositioned before the joint is tightened.

Reconnect and check the seal

Start the threaded connection straight and tighten it to bring the washer against the mating fitting. Open the water and inspect the joint before leaving the hose or appliance in service. If it still leaks, shut off the water before taking the connection apart again. Check the seating and the condition of both fittings. The package contains 10 washers, so the unused pieces can stay with your hose supplies for future repairs.
