Roll a wire basket over the orchard floor to gather pecans and other similarly sized nuts.
Gather nuts without stooping for each one
This Duke roller uses a wire basket that gathers pecans as it rolls across the ground. It also gathers hickory nuts and English walnuts of similar size. Its segmented handle adjusts to the user’s reach, letting the basket travel along a row without bending to pick up each nut. It is a hand tool for a backyard tree or small planting. It does not shake nuts from branches or clean the harvest after pickup.
Work a clean lane
Short, closely mowed grass makes nuts easier to see and gives the roller a cleaner path. Remove sticks and bulky debris that could stop the basket or mix into the gathered crop. Start where nuts are falling and roll through the area in steady passes, emptying the cage before it becomes difficult to handle. On uneven ground, change direction to reach nuts that a straight pass missed. The wire basket collects by rolling contact, not by suction or powered picking.
Pick up the crop promptly
Pecans left on damp ground have more contact with moisture and soil. Pick them up soon after they fall, then move them to a clean, dry place. The roller reduces stooping during collection, but it does not hull, wash, dry or sort nuts. Remove leaves and loose debris after emptying the basket. For food harvests, keep the collection surface and storage container clean; a ground roller cannot make contaminated or mold-damaged nuts suitable to eat.
Adjust the handle for your reach
This tool suits accessible ground under a few trees, where a person can walk the area and empty the cage as needed. For a large orchard, compare the labor with a wider push harvester before relying on a hand basket. Adjust the handle before starting and verify the sections are seated. Keep the wire basket near the ground and avoid forcing it over roots or stones that could distort the cage.
