A still-air incubator can do the job, but warm air rises to the top and cool air settles low, so eggs at one end of the box can see a different temperature than eggs at the other. This kit adds an electric fan that keeps the air moving through the box, which evens out the hot and cold spots a still-air setup leaves behind.

The kit covers the two things a hatch needs most: steady warmth and air that moves. Little Giant designed it for rooms where the temperature swings, which is when a still-air setup needs the most help.

Why circulated air helps a hatch

In a still-air incubator the air stratifies. The warmest air collects near the top and the cooler air sinks, so eggs in different spots can see different conditions. A fan breaks up those layers and keeps the air mixing, which is why many hatchers prefer a circulated-air setup.

Hatch season is when this matters most. A room in a barn or garage can swing with the outside weather, a warm afternoon followed by a cold night, and a fan helps the incubator ride out those changes. It suits a flock keeper hatching a small group of eggs, a 4-H kid with a first project and a farm that hatches every spring.

How to use it

Set up the incubator in a steady spot away from drafts, direct sun and the heat of a furnace or water heater, so the fan works with the room and not against a blast of air from a door.

Install the fan and heater kit before any eggs go in. Run the incubator empty for a while so you can watch how the temperature holds, and make adjustments before the eggs are in the box.

Check the thermometer at the same times each day and go by the reading inside the incubator, not the dial setting alone.

Keep the fan and heater clean of dust, lint and feathers. Debris on the blades slows the airflow the fan is there to create.

Good to know

  • Pair the kit with a dependable thermometer for the incubator. It's the best way to see what the eggs are actually getting.
  • Check the kit before the first egg goes in, not during the hatch. A quick test run now saves a scramble when the eggs are ready.
  • Check your incubator's model number before you order. The kit fits Little Giant incubators 9300, 10300 and 11300.
