Every farm and ranch needs one safe place for feed, seed and pet food, and this galvanized can gives you that spot. Keep the sweet feed, the garden seed and the dog food together in one sturdy can near the barn, where you can reach them without a trip across the lot.

Galvanized steel is what makes this can a working tool. The zinc coating on the steel is what resists rust and corrosion, so the can holds its shape through hot summers, wet springs and daily use. Its 31 gallon capacity holds a good supply between trips to the feed store, and a lid, sold separately, keeps mice and moisture out of what is inside.

Highlights

  • Heavy-duty galvanized construction
  • Resists rust and corrosion
  • Helps keep feed, seed and pet food free from pests
  • 31 gallon capacity
  • Matching galvanized lid sold separately

Why choose a galvanized can for feed storage?

Feed doesn't keep well when it sits out. Grain and pellets pull moisture from damp air, mold finds its way into corners that stay wet, and mice find an open bin fast. A closed metal can deals with most of that. Mice have a hard time chewing through steel, and a snug lid keeps the wet out.

Galvanized steel also holds up better than plastic in a working barn. Old plastic cans get brittle in the cold and split under a hard knock, while steel shrugs off the bumps from a feed cart or a boot kicked in passing. If you buy feed in quantity, or you keep seed and pet food on the same farm, one can like this keeps everything in one place and off the floor.

How to use it

  1. Set the can on a dry spot, up off damp concrete if you can, and out of the way of runoff from the roof.
  2. Keep the lid on whenever you aren't scooping, so feed stays clean and out of reach of mice.
  3. Empty the can and let it dry before you refill, especially if the feed has taken on any moisture.
  4. Check the lid fit every few weeks. A loose lid lets in mice and damp air.

Good to know

  • Lids are sold separately. Order one that matches the can so the feed stays covered from the first day.
  • Keep grain and pet food in the can, never in the open. A loose top is all a mouse needs.
  • Wipe the outside with a damp rag now and then to clear off dust and grime.
  • Use a second can for seed so garden seed and pet food never mix.
  • Replace the can when the galvanizing wears off in large patches and rust starts to spread across the steel.
