More from Zoetis

Pneumabort K+1b is a killed-virus vaccine for horses. It helps protect against EHV-1 respiratory disease and against abortion caused by EHV-1 infection, which makes it a fit for any barn with pregnant mares. It is given by intramuscular injection, one 2 mL dose at a time.

For broodmares, timing is the whole point. The series falls in the fifth, seventh and ninth months of pregnancy, and young horses start with a two-dose series after weaning. Plan the schedule with your veterinarian, who can tailor it to your herd's risk.

Highlights

  • Helps protect against EHV-1 respiratory disease
  • Helps protect pregnant mares against abortion due to EHV-1
  • Killed-virus vaccine
  • Intramuscular, 2 mL per dose
  • For horses 9 months of age and older

Why a killed-virus vaccine for the broodmare barn

A killed-virus vaccine uses virus that has been inactivated, so it cannot cause the infection it is meant to prevent. EHV-1 spreads where horses gather, so a mare that travels to a show, a sale or a boarding stable has more exposure than one that stays home. A vaccine on schedule is one of the simplest ways to manage that risk.

Who it suits: a breeder with pregnant mares, an owner bringing in young horses for their first vaccine series, or any horse owner who keeps horses in shared spaces. It fits a yearly herd plan, and the timing lines up well with a routine check of the herd by your vet.

How to use it

Follow the schedule for the horse, and plan the timing with your veterinarian.

  1. Pregnant mares: shake well and give one 2 mL dose intramuscularly during the fifth, seventh and ninth months of pregnancy.
  2. Young horses: after weaning, one 2 mL dose intramuscularly, then a second 2 mL dose 3 to 4 weeks later.
  3. Inject deep into the heavy muscles of the hindquarter, and give mild exercise for 1 week after the injection to help absorption. Duration of immunity has not been established, so ask your veterinarian about revaccination.

Shake the vaccine vigorously before drawing each dose so it stays evenly suspended. Use a clean needle for every dose, and write the lot number and date in your herd records.

Good to know

  • Vaccines must stay cold, so we don't ship them. Pick yours up at the store in Baker.
  • Keep the vaccine refrigerated between 2° C and 8° C (35° F and 46° F), never frozen and out of direct sunlight, until you draw the dose.
  • Record each lot number, the date and the horse's name, so you can match every dose to the horse it went into.
  • Vaccine timing lines up well with a yearly herd check-up, so ask your veterinarian to plan the shots around foaling and weaning dates.
