A practical open tank for livestock water

This Alligator Brand stock tank gives cattle, horses, or other livestock an open place to drink. Its oval galvanized-steel body is listed at approximately 102 gallons for this model. That capacity is a planning reference, not a promise that the tank will always hold exactly that amount in use. The water level changes as animals drink, and any connected supply changes how quickly it refills. For a pasture or lot, consider how many animals will arrive together and how much water the supply can deliver during that period. A large reservoir can buffer demand, but the inlet still has to keep up when animals drink.

Choose a firm, level site

Set the tank on well-drained, level ground. Remove sharp stones before placing it; a point under the base can damage the bottom. Water should drain away from the site rather than collect around it. Heavy livestock traffic often wears the ground into mud, especially where overflow or drips keep the soil wet. A compacted gravel pad or another stable, draining surface can help protect footing around the drinking area. Keep the surface broad enough for the animals that use it, and plan access so they do not have to crowd into one narrow approach.

Plan the fill and overflow

This is an open stock tank, so filling it requires a separate water source and any valve or plumbing the site needs. If a gravity-fed or pressurized line supplies the tank, provide a way to stop or carry away excess water. A float valve can shut off the flow when the tank reaches its set level. An overflow line is another option, but its outlet should carry water to a place where it will not create a mud hole or erode the ground. Check that the supply rate suits the livestock demand. For a large pasture, size storage and supply so the tank can serve a 30-minute drinking event without the water level dropping more than 10 inches.

Drain and clean when needed

A threaded drain plug makes routine emptying easier than removing water by hand. Shut off the supply before draining, then direct discharge away from the tank pad and animal traffic. Sediment can build up when source water carries dirt; periodic removal helps keep the tank clean and limits material left sitting in the bottom. Replace the plug securely before refilling and check for leakage around the fitting. Galvanized steel still faces water and weather exposure. Inspect it as part of ordinary farm upkeep, particularly around the drain and seams. Inspect the rim and corners for damage as part of routine checks.

Alligator Brand oval galvanized-steel stock tank. Approximate capacity: 102 gal. Approximate dimensions: 2 x 2 x 4 ft option; dimensions may vary up to 4 in because tanks are nested during shipping. Drain plug included.

Directions for use

Place on well-drained, level ground and remove sharp rocks from beneath the tank. Direct surface drainage away from the tank site. For gravity-fed or pressurized supply, provide a float shutoff or an overflow route that carries excess water away from livestock traffic. Size the water supply to animal demand. Shut off the supply before draining through the plug, then direct discharged water away from the tank pad. For a large pasture, provide enough storage for a 30-minute drinking event while limiting the water-level drop to 10 in. Where an overflow outlet is used, route it at least 50 ft from the tank to a stable drainage area.

Cautions

Inspect the tank and drain fitting during routine cleaning. Keep discharge and overflow from creating a muddy area around livestock access.
