A 5/8-inch pin lag hinge for mounting a swinging gate to a wood post.
This Mid-Park male lag screw hinge has a 5/8-inch pin and a 6-inch lag section. It is the post-side half of a gate hinge connection. The pin fits a compatible female strap hinge attached to the gate, so check that the strap hinge accepts a 5/8-inch pin before installation. This is a single hinge sold by itself. A matching female hinge and mounting hardware are separate parts. The lag section is intended to thread into a wood post, not a steel gate post. A steel post needs a different mounting arrangement.
Hold the gate in its intended closed position and check the gap on both sides before marking the post. Confirm that the latch can meet its keeper and that the gate clears the ground through its full swing. Place the upper and lower hinge points far enough apart to support the gate without forcing either strap hinge out of line. Two hinges are typical for a gate; larger gates may use a third. Match the hinge count and spacing to the gate and post, then mark each center carefully. A small alignment error can make a gate bind or leave the latch out of reach.
The female strap hinge attaches to the gate frame and drops over the male pin. Set the hinge so the gate can lift into place without striking the post, latch or nearby fence, then leave room for the strap to rotate freely. Test the swing and latch alignment before driving the lag section fully home. Adjustment can fine-tune the hang, but it cannot correct a poorly placed post or a strap that does not seat securely.
Drill a pilot hole at each marked location, keeping it aligned with the lag hinge’s entry path. Tighten the hinge with a wrench, then pause to check the gate’s swing and latch. Keep the post face sound where the lag threads engage. If the post is split, loose or badly weathered, repair the mounting location before hanging the gate. Once both hinge points are set, move the supported gate through its full arc and recheck clearances.

Confirm that the female strap hinge accepts the 5/8 in pin. Mark the gate and post positions with the gate held at its intended height and clearance. Drill a pilot hole in the wood post and tighten the lag hinge with a wrench. Test the gate swing and latch alignment before final adjustment.
Use only with a compatible gate hinge and a sound wood-post mounting location. A steel post requires a different mounting fitting. Support the gate during installation and testing.
