When the fecal count comes back high, or a new horse steps off the trailer and needs a clean start, PANACUR Paste is the syringe to reach for. It is a fenbendazole paste in a single syringe, flavored apple-cinnamon, which horses readily accept.
It is labeled for the control of large and small strongyles, including migrating larvae, along with pinworms and ascarids. The larvicidal dose is the only FDA-approved treatment for all stages of encysted small strongyles. It is safe for foals, pregnant mares and older horses, so you don't need a different product for the youngster or the old gelding.

Why choose a paste dewormer
A paste is the most direct way to deworm one horse. You measure the dose by the horse's weight, squeeze the paste toward the back of the tongue, and the whole dose goes down with no feed left to hide it in.
It is also the right tool for a horse that needs a clean start. A new horse off the trailer, a horse with a high fecal count, or a barn running a set deworming day all benefit from a dose that is easy to give and easy to track.

How to use it
Measure the dose by the horse's weight before you give it, and follow your vet's deworming plan for timing.
- Weigh the horse or measure with a weight tape. Dose by weight, not by eye.
- Set the dial ring at the horse's weight. At 2.3 mg/lb (5 mg/kg) for large strongyles, small strongyles and pinworms, one syringe deworms a 1,100 lb horse. For foals and weanlings under 18 months where ascarids are a problem, the dose is 4.6 mg/lb (10 mg/kg): set the ring at double the weight, and one syringe deworms a 550 lb horse.
- Make sure the horse's mouth is free of food, insert the nozzle through the space between the teeth and deposit the paste on the back of the tongue.
- Hold the head up for a moment so the paste goes down rather than out.
- Write down the date, the horse and the dose, so the next deworming day stays on schedule.
Good to know
- Have your vet run a fecal egg count first. It tells you whether this is a deworming week or a wait week, and it shows afterward whether the dose did its job.
- Pair it with a weight tape. The dose depends on the horse's weight, so the tape is what keeps the dose accurate.
- Pick up manure regularly and keep the stall clean. Fewer eggs on the ground means fewer for the horses to pick up.
- Keep a spare in the tack box. Deworming day has a way of landing the same week the farrier, the hay delivery and the vet all show up.
