More from Quest

By fall your horse has grazed all season, and encysted small strongyles sit in the gut wall where they are hard to reach. Quest Plus Gel is built for the late grazing season. Moxidectin targets adult and encysted small strongyles, along with large strongyles, bots, pinworms, hairworms and stomach worms, and praziquantel targets tapeworms, all in one dose.

The gel dissolves quickly on the tongue, so the dose goes down fast. The SURE-DIAL syringe dials the dose to the horse's weight, and one syringe treats up to 1,500 lb. It is safe for breeding, pregnant and lactating mares, and it is for horses 6 months of age and older.

Why choose a fall dewormer

Fall is when most barns do the big job. Late grazing season is when experts recommend treating for tapeworms, and moxidectin handles the small strongyles in the same dose. Tapeworms are a particular concern in the late grazing season, which is why a product with praziquantel in it earns its spot.

It suits any horse on a parasite program, from the pasture pony to the show horse. It is also a good fit for the broodmare, since it is safe for breeding, pregnant and lactating mares.

It is a one-dose job, so there is no second trip to the stall. Pick up the fall dose ahead of time and it is ready when the schedule comes around.

How to use it

Weigh the horse first, since the SURE-DIAL syringe is only as accurate as the weight you dial in.

  1. Weigh the horse, or run a weight tape around the girth.
  2. Dial the syringe to the horse's weight.
  3. Make sure there is no feed in the horse's mouth, place the tip at the space between the teeth and push the plunger until it stops, depositing the gel on the back of the tongue. Raise the head slightly so the horse swallows.
  4. Record the date and the weight in the horse's health log.
  5. Ask your vet which product should go on the spring schedule, since each product is timed for its own season.

Good to know

  • Time it for October through December, the late grazing season, and keep the spring dose on a different product for its own season.
  • Roundworm resistance to moxidectin and ivermectin is widespread, so a young horse that doesn't clean up needs a vet's review, not a second dose of the same product.
  • Broodmares can stay on the fall schedule with this one, since it is safe for breeding, pregnant and lactating mares. Ask your vet before using it on a breeding stallion.
  • Foals under 6 months are not a fit for this product, so ask your vet about a foal program.
