When worms show up in the flock, you want a dewormer that goes into the water and gets to work without a chase or a syringe on every bird. Safe-Guard AquaSol is a fenbendazole suspension that mixes into drinking water, so you can treat the whole group at once in the water they already drink.

It is FDA-approved for chickens. For broiler and replacement chickens it treats and controls adult Ascaridia galli, and for breeding chickens and laying hens it treats and controls adult A. galli and Heterakis gallinarum. The course runs five consecutive days, and chickens have no withdrawal period when used as directed.

Highlights

  • Mixes into drinking water for the whole flock
  • Five consecutive days of treatment
  • Treats and controls adult Ascaridia galli
  • Covers breeding chickens and laying hens
  • Comes with a reusable dosing syringe
  • No withdrawal period for chickens when used as directed

Why treat through the water

Worming a flock bird by bird stresses everyone and takes forever. Water treatment reaches the whole group at once, and it fits into the morning routine you already have. The medicated water is offered first thing in the morning, when birds drink the most.

Who it suits: a backyard flock with a worm problem, a laying hen operation that needs a flock-wide program, or a breeder keeping breeding hens healthy. A deworming plan works best when a vet helps with diagnosis and when you watch how well each treatment works over time.

How to use it

Dose by the flock's total body weight, and mix fresh medicated water each day for five consecutive days.

  1. Estimate the total body weight of the whole flock. Choose the water volume from the flock weight, from 4 cups for 22 to 55 lbs up to 4 gallons for 771 to 880 lbs.
  2. Shake the vial for about 10 seconds, attach the syringe supplied with the product, and draw the amount for the flock weight.
  3. Dispense it into the mixing container and stir until the medicated water looks uniformly hazy.
  4. Empty the waterers, then fill them with the medicated water first thing in the morning. Birds should have unrestricted access to it and no other water until it is consumed.
  5. Once the medicated water is gone, provide non-medicated drinking water.

Use the medicated water within 24 hours. Clean the syringe with hot tap water, rinse it, and keep it for the next treatment.

Good to know

  • One vial treats a flock with a total body weight of up to 264 lbs for five consecutive days.
  • The product should not be used for flocks under 22 lbs, because accurate doses cannot be measured for flocks that small.
  • Watch treatment effectiveness after each deworming. A decrease over time may point to resistance.
  • Store at room temperature and never let it freeze. Once opened, use it within 6 months.

Cautions

Not for use in humans. Keep out of reach of children. Protective gloves should be used and care should be taken when handling the product to avoid skin and eye exposure and accidental ingestion. Accidental exposure may result in skin and eye irritation. Accidental ingestion may cause gastrointestinal disturbances and hypersensitivity reactions in humans. No withdrawal period is required when used according to labeling.

Parasite resistance may develop to any dewormer. All dewormers require accurate dosing for best results. Following the use of any dewormer, effectiveness of treatment should be monitored. A decrease of effectiveness over time may indicate the development of resistance to the dewormer administered. The parasite management plan should be adjusted accordingly based on regular monitoring.
