Some horses see the paste tube coming and head for the back of the pasture. EQUI-BITS puts the dewormer in the feed bucket instead, so the dose goes down while the horse is eating. For the hard-to-catch horse, the hard-to-paste horse, and a weanling or yearling already on feed, that is the difference between a quick deworming day and a fight in the barn aisle.

This is a Type C medicated feed with 5.0 grams of fenbendazole per kilogram, or 2.27 grams per pound. It controls large strongyles, small strongyles, pinworms and ascarids, and it is safe for pregnant mares and stallions. It is a one-day treatment spread on top of the daily ration, with no prior withdrawal of feed or water.

Highlights

  • Dewormer in feed, so there is no paste tube and no head tossing
  • Controls large strongyles, small strongyles, pinworms and ascarids
  • Safe for pregnant mares and stallions
  • Made for weanlings and yearlings on feed
  • 5.0 grams per kilogram of fenbendazole

Why choose a feed-through dewormer

A paste dewormer works well when the horse cooperates. A feed-through product works when the horse is hungry, and most horses are hungry for much of the day. For the horse that clamps its mouth shut, the one that is hard to catch in a pasture, or the youngster you are still learning to handle, the dose goes into the bucket and the horse does the rest.

Fenbendazole has been a long-used dewormer for horses. A top-dress dose suits a horse already on a grain routine, because the pellets ride on the feed it already eats. One day's ration does the job.

How to use it

Feed for one day, spread uniformly on top of the daily ration. No prior withdrawal of feed or water is necessary.

  1. Weigh or tape the horse. For large strongyles, small strongyles and pinworms, feed 1.0 lb for each 1,000 lb of body weight; a 1.25-lb container treats 1,250 lb.
  2. For ascarids, feed 1.0 lb for each 500 lb of body weight; a 1.25-lb container treats 625 lb.
  3. Watch the horse clean up the whole serving. A horse that leaves feed behind may not have taken the full dose.
  4. Make sure the horse is eating normally before you feed it, so it takes in the full dose.
  5. Keep the feed sealed and dry in the tack room, out of reach of children and other animals.

Good to know

  • Deworm on a schedule your vet helps set. A fecal egg count shows which worms are present and how heavy the load is, so the plan goes after the worms that matter.
  • Rotating dewormer classes is a decision for your vet, not something to do on your own.
  • Fresh water, clean pasture and regular manure pickup do as much for worm control as the dewormer does.
  • Keep a spare on the shelf so the next deworming day never slips.

Cautions

Do not use in horses intended for human consumption.

Consult your veterinarian for the diagnosis, treatment and control of parasitism.

Get it on the shelf before the next deworming day, so the horse that dodges the halter does not win again.
