Deworming goes easier when the horse takes the paste without a fight. SAFE-GUARD (fenbendazole) Paste 10% has an apple-cinnamon flavor that horses readily accept, so the dose goes in the mouth and not all over your shirt.

It is indicated for the control of large and small strongyles, including migrating larvae, pinworms and ascarids, and for arteritis caused by fourth stage larvae of Strongylus vulgaris in horses. It is safe for foals, pregnant mares and older horses, so the whole herd can run on one product. It works by inhibiting energy metabolism in the parasite.

Highlights

  • Apple-cinnamon flavor horses readily accept
  • Controls large and small strongyles, pinworms and ascarids
  • Covers encysted and migrating larval stages
  • Safe for foals, pregnant mares and older horses
  • Oral paste in a syringe for simple dosing

Why choose a flavored paste

A paste dewormer is only as good as the day you actually give it. A horse that fights the syringe gets a partial dose and a bad memory of the next one, so flavor matters more than most owners think. Horses that take their paste calmly are easier to deworm on schedule, and a schedule is what keeps the worm load down.

It is a practical choice for a mixed herd. The same product fits foals, broodmares and senior horses, so there is one thing to stock and one thing to track in the tack room.

How to use it

  1. Weigh or tape-measure each horse before dosing.
  2. Check the expiration date before you open the syringe.
  3. Set the dial ring at the horse's weight, make sure the mouth is free of food, then insert the nozzle through the space between the teeth and deposit the paste on the back of the tongue.
  4. Write the date and the horse in your barn log.
  5. Store at or below 77°F (25°C).

Good to know

  • Ask your vet for a fecal egg count plan, so you deworm based on the parasites your horses actually carry.
  • Keep the next tube on hand for the scheduled deworming date.
  • Foals, pregnant mares and older horses can take the same paste, but each one still gets a dose by weight.
  • Rotating dewormer classes is a call for your vet.
