Stringing a straight run of electric fence goes faster when the insulators go in clean. This Field Guardian ring insulator screws into a wood post, so there's no nail to bend and no hammer to swing into a post that's already set. The ring holds polyrope, polywire and wire, which covers most of the straight runs on a pasture or paddock.
The threads are the part that matters. The design cuts into the wood rather than wedging it apart, so the post stays sound and the installation is easier. The high density polyethylene body is a tough plastic that holds up outdoors, and the ring mounts on the front or the back of the post, whichever keeps the wire in line with the run.
Highlights
- Screw-in ring for wood posts
- Holds polyrope, polywire and wire
- Handles polytape up to 1/2 inch wide
- Threads cut the wood instead of splitting it
- High density polyethylene body
- Mounts on the front or the back of the post
Why choose a screw-in ring for wood posts
Wood posts take a lot of weather, wind and animal contact, and the insulator is the point where the wire meets the post. A screw-in ring keeps the work simple. There's no nail to drive and no split to repair, and that matters on a fence you plan to keep for years.
Use it on straight runs and paddock divisions, where the wire runs in a line through the post. It isn't built as a corner insulator and it isn't a high-tensile fitting, so save those jobs for parts designed for them. Keeping to the straight runs is how the fence stays tight and the insulators last.
Keep a few in the fence box. A broken insulator can stop a whole run until it's replaced, and a spare on hand turns a half-day repair into a quick stop at the post.

How to use it
Pick a sound wood post and set the ring at the wire height you planned. Screw the insulator in until the ring sits firmly against the post, then run the wire through the ring before you tension the line.
- Choose the height. Mark the wire height for the run and pick the post.
- Screw it in. Turn the insulator into the wood until it's snug. The threads cut their own path.
- Set the wire. Run the polyrope, polywire or wire through the ring, and check that the wire sits in the ring instead of rubbing the post.
- Tension and check. Tighten the line, then walk the fence and check each insulator once the wire is up.
Good to know
- Use it on wood posts only. Corner and high-tensile jobs need their own parts.
- Pair it with polywire or polyrope from the same aisle for lanes and paddock divisions.
- Check the insulators every season. A loose insulator lets the wire sag or touch the post, which can drain the charge from that section of the fence.
