Horses pick up worms from every pasture they graze, however well it is kept. Zimecterin Gold is a single-dose paste that goes after tapeworms and bots, along with small and large strongyles, ascarids, pinworms, threadworms and lungworms. One syringe is marked by weight, so you dose the horse in front of you and not a generic tube.
The paste pairs ivermectin with praziquantel, two actives that together cover a wide range of horse worms. Each syringe treats a horse up to 1,250 lb, and each weight marking on the plunger covers 250 lb of body weight. It is the kind of product you keep in the tack room for the whole season.
Highlights
- Removes roundworms, tapeworms and bots with a single dose

- For horses two months of age and older
- Plunger marked every 250 lb of body weight
- Treats a horse up to 1,250 lb from one syringe
- Paste goes on the back of the tongue
Why choose a paste with two actives
A horse with a mixed worm load does better with a product that covers more than one kind of worm. A paste that combines ivermectin and praziquantel covers tapeworms and bots along with the roundworms and lungworms that show up in pastures. For a horse on a regular program, one syringe on each dosing day keeps the work simple.
A weight-marked plunger matters more than most people think. A 900-lb gelding and a 1,250-lb draft cross do not need the same amount of paste, and a syringe marked every 250 lb lets you match the dose to the animal.

How to use it
Dose by body weight, using the markings on the plunger. Weigh your horse or measure with a tape before you start.
- Hold the plunger, turn the knurled ring a quarter turn to the left, and slide it so the side nearest the barrel sits at the horse's weight marking. Lock it with a quarter turn to the right.
- Make sure the horse's mouth has no feed in it.
- Remove the cover from the tip and insert the tip between the teeth.
- Press the plunger all the way down, depositing the paste on the back of the tongue.
- Raise the horse's head for a few seconds right after dosing.
Set the deworming schedule with your vet. All horses belong in a regular parasite control program, with extra attention for mares, foals and yearlings. Foals can start treatment at 2 months of age.
Good to know
- Weigh or tape the horse before dosing, and set the plunger to that weight. A 900-lb horse gets less paste than a 1,250-lb horse.
- Keep the syringe under 86°F and out of the sun. A closed tack room in a Florida summer can run hot, so store it in the cool part of the barn.
- Watch the horse after dosing. Rare swelling and irritation of the mouth, lips and tongue have been reported, and they have been transitory.
- Ask your vet which horses get treated and when. Treating the horses that need it keeps the program focused.
