A single 1 mL killed-virus vaccine dose for healthy horses, labeled to aid in prevention of Eastern and Western equine encephalomyelitis and tetanus.

A labeled core-vaccine option for horses

Equiloid Innovator is a Zoetis vaccine for healthy horses. The 1 mL syringe contains killed Eastern and Western equine encephalomyelitis virus fractions with tetanus toxoid. The current product record identifies the vaccine for equine use. It is labeled as an aid in prevention of encephalomyelitis due to Eastern and Western viruses and tetanus. Review the package name and the horse’s vaccination history with a veterinarian when deciding whether this product fits a vaccination plan. The current insert directs that healthy horses receive two 1 mL doses, with the second dose 3 to 4 weeks after the first. It does not set a revaccination interval in the directions. For revaccination frequency, or when a horse faces stress or likely exposure, the insert says to contact a veterinarian or the manufacturer. Those details matter when a horse has an incomplete or unknown vaccination history. Keep the serial number and expiration information available for the animal’s medical record. Equiloid is administered intramuscularly using aseptic technique. The package insert says to shake well and use the entire contents when first opened. It identifies a healthy-horse indication at 10 months of age or older. Field safety testing supports use in horses 3 months of age or older, while efficacy has not been established in foals under 3 months. A transient local reaction may occur at the injection site. The label also says not to vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter. This vaccine needs careful temperature handling. Keep it refrigerated at 2–8°C, protect it from direct sunlight and prolonged higher temperatures, and do not freeze it. Once the syringe is out of refrigeration, coordinate its use promptly with the veterinarian. The label says not to mix it with other products. Store the carton and syringe together so the product name, dose, lot, and expiry remain available when the horse is seen.
