Horn fly control that doesn't take a chute, a sprayer or a free afternoon. Hang these strips where your cattle come for mineral, and they treat and re-treat themselves every time they take a lick. They are labeled for beef cattle, dairy cattle (including lactating cows) and calves, so the whole herd is covered at one feeder.

Each pack holds 10 strips and 10 kick-out rings, the full set for one feeder. The strips are weatherproof, and they cost less to run than fly control that takes more labor. For range cattle you would otherwise have to gather and work, that adds up fast.

Highlights

  • Horn fly control at the mineral feeder
  • Cattle treat and re-treat themselves at the mineral feeder
  • For beef cattle, dairy cattle (including lactating) and calves
  • Weatherproof
  • Costs less than more labor-intensive fly control
  • 10 strips and 10 kick-out rings per pack

Why hang them at the mineral feeder?

Cattle visit the mineral feeder on a regular routine. Put the strips where they already go, and every trip to the feeder is a treatment without extra handling. Nothing has to be run through the alley, sprayed on the back or caught in a chute.

Labor is the hidden cost of most fly programs. Running cattle through a chute, mixing spray and treating each animal takes hours and stresses the herd. Strips at the feeder work while the cattle keep their normal routine, which suits a herd that doesn't get handled often.

They fit cow-calf operations with a mineral feeder in the pasture, small herds that share one feeder, and bigger herds where a labor-heavy program doesn't fit the schedule. One feeder with 10 strips serves 10 to 30 head.

How to use it

  1. Put the mineral feeder in use 14 days before you add the strips, so the cattle are used to it.
  2. Attach the 10 kick-out rings along the upper arch of the feeder opening and thread one strip onto each ring.
  3. Use 10 strips per feeder, with one feeder for every 10 to 30 head.
  4. Keep the feeder well supplied with mineral and set it close to water to encourage daily use.
  5. When the strips stop working, remove or replace them.
  6. Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks, shoes and gloves when you handle the strips, and wash up before you eat, drink or use tobacco.

Good to know

  • Plan the 14 days. Set the feeder out two weeks before the strips go in, so the herd is already visiting it when you hang them.
  • Keep the feeder area clean and dry. Fresh mineral and a tidy feeder keep cattle coming back to the spot where the strips hang.
  • Tie it to a mineral routine. The strips work on the trip cattle already make, so they pair with the mineral program you are running.
  • Clean up the manure. Flies breed in manure, so cleaning out pens and lots cuts the fly load the strips have to handle.
  • Bag the old strips. Wrap used strips in a plastic bag or several layers of newspaper and put them in the trash, well away from ponds and creeks.
