Match the trap to the animal

Duke model 1112 is the large heavy-duty single-door cage trap, measuring 28 x 12 x 12 inches. Duke assigns it to raccoons, cats, and armadillos. The reinforced internal rod frame, gravity-drop door, narrow mesh, and protected bait area distinguish it from the lighter standard cage designs. Fit matters: the target needs room to enter, while the trap must sit securely at the chosen location. Check the local species guidance before setting a live trap, since legal status and permitted handling depend on the animal and place.

Use the bait area to guide entry

The mesh protects bait from being reached from outside, and the pressure-sensitive pan sits inside the cage. Place bait at or just beyond the trigger so an animal must step fully into the trap to reach it. Keep the front approach open, with the door aligned to the animal's route rather than pointed into a solid wall or thick brush. A single-door trap differs from a two-door tunnel: the bait is placed at the far end and the animal enters from one side. This gives you a clear setup to inspect before setting the door.

Plan for the whole capture

A cage trap needs attention after it closes. Choose a location where you can inspect it without crossing unsafe ground or disturbing livestock, pets, or neighbors. Florida requires traps and snares to be inspected at least once every 24 hours. Live-captured nuisance wildlife must be legally released or humanely euthanized within 24 hours of capture or trap inspection. Release non-target wildlife immediately at the capture site. Only native wildlife may be released; nonnative wildlife cannot be transported or relocated except for euthanasia. Species restrictions and release rules vary, so confirm what applies before setting the trap. If you cannot check it reliably, wait until you can.

Compare the neighboring sizes

Duke’s heavy-duty range steps from model 1109 at 26 x 9 x 9 inches for large squirrels, rabbits, and skunks, to this 1112 at 28 x 12 x 12 inches for raccoons, cats, and armadillos. Model 1114 is a larger 36 x 15 x 14 inch cage for large raccoons, foxes, or cats. These sizes help you compare capacity with the target and available space.
