A reusable outdoor trap that uses floral scents and sex attractants to collect adult Japanese and Oriental beetles in a large bag.
Capture adult Japanese and Oriental beetles
The RESCUE! Japanese and Oriental Beetle Trap uses floral scents together with a sex attractant to draw both male and female beetles. The green trap panels direct the adults into an attached collection bag, where they cannot escape. The lure and capture body work together: the scent brings flying adults toward the trap, while the bag supplies the holding space. This is an outdoor adult-insect capture system rather than a spray applied to plant leaves.
Placement matters because the lure attracts
The manufacturer directs users to hang the trap about four feet above ground and at least 30 feet from ornamental plants they want to protect. That separation is meaningful. University of Minnesota Extension warns that garden traps may attract more Japanese beetles than they catch, potentially increasing feeding on nearby plants. Catching many insects is therefore not proof that the surrounding plants are protected. Choose the trap for adult capture or observation, with realistic expectations about garden damage.
Adult beetles and grubs are separate problems
Adult Japanese beetles feed on foliage, flowers and fruit. Their grub larvae feed mainly on grass roots beneath the soil. A bag catching flying adults does not deliver a treatment to that underground stage. This distinction is useful when deciding what the visible damage means: eaten ornamental leaves and damaged lawn roots point to different feeding stages, even though they may involve the same insect species. A trap is not a substitute for identifying the cause of turf damage.
A reusable seasonal setup
The controlled-release lure is designed for a beetle season, described by RESCUE! as typically six to eight weeks or longer depending on region. The easy-lock bottom allows the collection bag to be emptied and reused. Its double-layer nylon construction and welded green panels form the reusable capture body. A replacement lure cartridge can renew that body for another season. The manufacturer advises moving the hanging trap to a protected location during heavy rain or wind.
Read the catch as a capture result
A collection bag shows which adults reached that trap. It does not count all beetles nearby or measure how much feeding was prevented. For a gardener comparing options, that is the useful boundary: the product attracts and collects adult beetles, while the condition of nearby plants remains a separate observation. It offers reusable capture equipment without promising that a flower bed or fruit planting will be free of beetles.
Directions for use
The trap should be placed at least 30 feet from ornamental plants, to lure beetles away from the area where they are creating damage. Hang the trap by its twist-tie hanger from a post or stake, four feet above the ground and away from the desired foliage. During heavy rain or wind, the trap should be removed to a protected location.
After the season, empty the collection bag via easy-lock bottom, rinse the bag with a hose, and let it dry thoroughly. When you’re getting ready for the next beetle season, you’ll need to purchase a fresh lure cartridge (sold separately).
Cautions
Hang traps away from animals to prevent them from getting into the trap.
