A single-pouch herbicide for outdoor residential turfgrass lawns and established woody ornamentals in residential landscaped areas.

When sedges interrupt a lawn

SedgeHammer+ is a selective postemergence herbicide for listed weeds, including yellow and purple nutsedge and Kyllinga. It is intended for outdoor residential use on established turfgrass lawns and established woody ornamentals in residential landscaped areas. That scope makes it a fit for a specific weed problem in a compatible home lawn, not a general spray for commercial turf, golf courses, nurseries, or farms.

Recognize the target

Nutsedge can be mistaken for ordinary lawn grass because it grows among turf and is often cut during mowing. SedgeHammer+ targets listed sedges and certain other weeds while allowing use on turfgrass species named in the residential label. This selective behavior is why accurate identification matters. If the patch is a desirable grass or an unlisted weed, this product may not be the right choice.

A pouch with surfactant included

The single 13.5 gram pouch contains halosulfuron-methyl with a dry nonionic surfactant. The built-in surfactant helps the spray wet weed foliage, so a separate surfactant is not part of the labeled residential preparation. This is a different formulation from other SedgeHammer products. Keep the pouch with its own directions rather than borrowing instructions from a larger professional version.

Compatible established turf

The residential directions name both cool-season and warm-season grasses. Examples include tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass, with bermudagrass and St. Augustine grass among the warm-season choices. This is useful because the weed may look similar across quite different lawns, while turf compatibility is a separate question. The product is selected for an established, compatible lawn with a listed weed, rather than for every green patch that stands above the mowing height.

Weed size and ornamental establishment

Horsetail appears in the residential directions with different expectations for smaller and taller growth: control below six inches and suppression above that height. The ornamental directions also require the woody plants to have been established for at least three months. These details show why recognizing the plant is only the first step. Its growth stage and the condition of the planting determine which residential use fits, even when the same single pouch supplies the spray.

Directions for use

It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in any manner inconsistent with its labeling. Stop. Read the label before using. Use only as directed on this label. Intended for outdoor residential use only. Stop. Do not allow people or pets to enter the treated area until sprays have dried.

Remove and wash contaminated clothing before reuse. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) Wear long sleeved shirt, long pants, shoes, plus sock. ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD SECTION OF PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENTS GROUNDWATER ADVISORY Halosulfuron-methyl is known to leach through soil into ground water under certain conditions as a result of label use. This chemical may leach into ground water if used in areas where soils are permeable, particularly where the water table is shallow. SURFACE WATER ADVISORY This product may impact surface water quality due to runoff of rain water. This is especially true for poorly draining soils and soils with shallow ground water. This product is classified as having high potential for reaching surface water via runoff for several months or more after application. A level, well-maintained vegetative buffer strip between areas to which this product is applied and surface water features such as ponds, streams, and springs will reduce the potential loading of halosulfuron-methyl from runoff water and sediment. Runoff of this product will be greatly reduced by avoiding applications when rainfall or irrigation is expected to occur within 48 hours. WINDBLOWN SOIL PARTICLES SEDGEHAMMER+ has the potential to move off-site due to wind erosion. Soils that are subject to wind erosion usually have a high silt and/or fine to very fine sand fractions and low organic matter. Other factors which can affect the movement of windblown soil include the intensity and direction of prevailing winds, vegetative cover, site slope, rainfall, and drainage patterns. Avoid applying SEDGEHAMMER+ if prevailing local conditions may be expected to result in off-site movement. NON-TARGET ORGANISM ADVISORY This product is toxic to plants and may adversely impact the forage and habitat of non-target organisms, including pollinators, in areas adjacent to the treated area. Protect the forage and habitat of non-target organisms by minimizing spray drift.

USE PRECAUTIONS x Avoid applications when rainfall is forecasted to occur within 4 hours. x This product may be used on established seeded, sodded, or sprigged residential turfgrass lawns. Allow the turf to develop a good root system and uniform stand before application. x Treated areas may be overseeded with annual or perennial ryegrass or Bermudagrass, 2 weeks after application. x Avoid application of SEDGEHAMMER+ when turfgrass lawns or nutsedge is under stress since turf injury and poor nutsedge control may result. x Avoid excessive overlap of the spray. x Annual and perennial herbaceous ornamentals, including color plants, may be injured when transplanted into landscaped areas treated with SEDGEHAMMER+. USE RESTRICTIONS x Do not exceed 5 1/3 oz by weight of this product (0.25 lb active ingredient) per acre per 12 month period. x No more than 4 applications can be made per year with a minimum of 14 days between applications. x Do not store SEDGEHAMMER+ in solution.
