Standing water around a barn is where mosquitoes get their start. A Mosquito Dunk floats on that water and keeps releasing a bacterium for 30 days or more, so the larvae that hatch there don't grow into biting adults. Toss one in the rain barrel, the stock trough, the bird bath or the planter reservoir and it gets to work on the water where the larvae are.

Each dunk treats up to 100 square feet of water surface, whatever the depth. The active ingredient is Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis, or Bti, a bacterium that mosquito larvae eat as they feed in the water. The dunk dissolves slowly, so Bti reaches the surface and then settles to the bottom. It is approved for use in organic production, and dry dunks keep their potency on the shelf until you need them.

Highlights

  • Kills mosquito larvae for 30 days or more
  • Treats up to 100 square feet of water surface, any depth
  • Breaks into pieces for bird baths and small containers
  • Works in rain barrels, troughs, ponds and bird baths
  • Approved for use in organic production
  • Dry dunks keep their potency

What it's for

Mosquitoes need standing water to breed, and a farm has more of it than most people think: rain barrels, stock troughs, buckets, tire ruts, gutters and tree holes. A dunk gives you a long-lasting treatment for all of it, without draining and scrubbing every container each time it rains.

It suits the horse owner with water troughs, the cattle or goat keeper with stock tanks, and the gardener with a backyard pond. It can be used in fish habitats too, so a stock pond with fish in it is a fit. The product is a biological larvicide, which means it works on the larval stage in the water, not on the adults flying around the yard.

How to use it

  1. Float one dunk in standing water covering up to 100 square feet of surface, whatever the depth.
  2. For a smaller spot, break off a piece. Bird baths and rain barrels are good candidates for part of a dunk.
  3. Anchor the dunk with a string through the center hole, or stake it in place, wherever water could flush it out.
  4. Place a dunk in standing water once a month, to keep the treatment going.
  5. Replace the dunk when it has completely dissolved.
  6. Store unused dunks dry until you need them.

Good to know

  • Dunk the rain barrel and the stock trough on the same day, so the water in both is treated before the next hatch.
  • Break a dunk for the bird bath and keep the rest for the next refill.
  • Check buckets, tire ruts, tree holes and gutters on your regular rounds, because a forgotten container is where mosquitoes start.
  • Dry dunks keep their potency, so spare dunks can sit on the shelf until the rains start.
  • Store dunks so they do not contaminate water, food or feed.
